How to Save Money at Southeast Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was recommended by a friend and it was the best experience I’ve had. My little Chewy needed sedated grooming and everyone answered my questions and were very professional and the facility was clean. He went in all matted and came out looking like a show dog!!! ❤️I will definitely return and recommend!!

I have brought numerous dogs here over the years and not until recent that I have noticed that there seems to be a issue with not opening on time and a major issue that is easy to fix, they have no doctor in the clinic on Wednesdays, so if you show up in the morning at the post opening time just to wait 1 and a half hours for them to open for the staff to say we don't see patients on Wednesday. Hey that's a simple fix put that info on the door and on your web site

I want to be as objective as possible as I write this review. It has been almost four months since my cat died, so I think enough time has passed for me to process the situation. When I first moved to San Antonio, I chose Southeast Animal Hospital to be Aspen's clinic since I have family here who recommended them. When I would take him in for his regular check-ups and vaccinations, he received wonderful care, and I was always given so much time and patience while discussing said care. I took him in last November after his appetite had slowed significantly and he had started to lose weight. He was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, which was unexpected for me given that he was only three years old, but I trusted these experienced vets who had previously given him loving care. Over the last few weeks of his life, I was probably calling or driving to the clinic every other day. Very few attempts at solutions were given, despite the prescribed medication not helping and the prescribed food not being eaten (along with almost anything else I would try to feed him). The last time I brought him in, I was assigned to a different veterinarian. At this point, she sympathetically told me that he likely only had a few days left. In a last-ditch effort to save his life, I reached out to his old veterinarian in College Station. She offered to look at his blood work, and immediately recommended I call a feline specialist who is also based here in San Antonio. But at this point, it was too late, and Aspen died in an emergency clinic before I could get him to that appointment. I am not blaming Southeast Animal Hospital for his death. But even long into hindsight, I do feel that he was not treated with the urgency that he needed when a serious problem arose. When his old vet was able to examine his blood work, she found abnormalities (not previously mentioned to me) that would have been very unusual for a cat with CKD, suggesting that something different may have been the underlying cause for his symptoms. Even if I had taken Aspen to an different clinic immediately, there's a chance that his outcome would have been the same. But that what-if is always going to stay with me, and I don't think I will ever be comfortable returning to this clinic with any new pets in the future.

Great doctors that take more of a conservative approach (read: cheaper) to solutions. I've taken my pets here for over 10 years, and never have I felt overcharged or pressured from the staff. UPDATE: still take all our pets here and love the staff and doctors.

My dog unfortunately got attacked and needed stitches. Called before hand to see if they would be able to give stitches and I was told to come in and we’ll be seen. When I got there I was told that the doctor would NOT be able to see us because it was 3:30 and they closed at 6! What a waste of time and thankfully my dog was not in serious need of medical attention. Overall would not recommend
