How to Save Money at Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On 10/19/24, I woke up to my chihuahua giving birth. Unfortunately, the first puppy did not make it and my dog was not able to push out her remaining 3 babies. I went to the first emergency vet clinic and it was way out of budget for the c section and I had to drive another 40 minutes to get there. I proceeded to find other nearby locations, but none of them were equipped to conduct the surgery. I called Heart of Texas Veterinary Clinic and sent them the x rays I received from the first one. Luckily they were across the street! The moment I arrived, I was greeted by the receptionist and they were so thorough and caring for my baby girl. They got me in the room immediately and the tech and doctor came in within a few minutes to run some test on my dog. They explained everything so well and told me they had high hopes for her. Well, she came back with the rest of her puppies, instructions on how to care for her, a refund because I overpaid, and answered all of my follow up questions, even my dumb ones. I just wanted to say how grateful I am to Heart of Texas Veterinary Clinic for providing me peace and a high level of service. Thank you so much Dr. Edwards for taking great care of my baby and treating me with the utmost respect. I’ve never felt so calm in an emergency surgery and it’s all thanks to you and your team. I hope this review gets to you and I’m going to recommend everyone I know to your clinic. This will be posted on all of my social media. Words cannot explain how relieved and thankful I am for all of you. I know I can trust your team and will be going to you guys from here on out. Thank you again and God bless you all!

When my dog Rocky's primary vet put a referral in with Heart of Texas it was done so seeking answers to what was causing his sudden loss of weight and increased liver enzymes. Unfortunately due to appointments being filled already his appointment wasn't scheduled until mid September. The time of his referral was placed in July and I had just lost my oldest dog Luna in June. So to say my nerves were shot would be an understatement. I scheduled Rocky's appointment with the reassurance that if anything opened up before his appointment I would get a call. Sadly with time passing Rocky's symptoms worsened and he was losing weight quicker. During this time the staff at Heart of Texas continued to check in and try to find a time Rocky could come in eariler. After a bad experience at another specialty vet Heart of Texas was able to move some appointments around to get him seen much sooner due to his worsening symptoms. After his first appointment with the doctor I was given the heartbreaking news it was cancer. After just losing Luna I felt the room was spining with the news and my world was crashing. The doctor and staff were kind and understanding as I grasped to understand their words and accept this was happening to my once very happy boy. We started chemo to give my boy a fighting chance, for more time, for more snuggles and "I love you Rocky". To our dismay the medication was hard on him causing other issues for him. Rocky was coming to the end of his battle that up until a month and half prior I didn't know he was having. Myself, my husband and my mother cried on the floor holding Rocky as the doctor sweetly but bluntly told us our options but that in the end Rocky had a few days left. We took him home. Without the staff at Heart of Texas checking in and making so many accommodations I think my sweet boy would have passed sooner and us without any knowledge of what was taking our boy away. They never got to see my handsome boy as he was, so attached is a few pictures of my Rock Rock as he was all the time. Happy and loving life. Thank you for caring for my dog for the brief time you did as his primary vet always did.

heart of texas was phenomenal! all the girls here were amazing, the communication was 10/10 - phone calls & texts! they had a sense of urgency when it came to my baby and were quick to get him on the schedule for surgery. they took extra measures once a heart murmur was found, making sure my baby was okay to go under anesthesia. they answered all my questions and provided great care for my dog everytime he came in. he has bad anxiety when it comes to vets and this is the first place he was not very anxious in! he warmed up to the staff quite quickly and it was very surprising but relieving for me. huge thank you to the oral surgeon and all the girls for taking care of my baby and providing him a safe treatment plan to recovery! he loved you guys.

It’s hard to find the right words to express the deep gratitude we feel for everyone at this vet hospital. When we were transferred late on a Friday night, we were scared and didn’t know what to expect for our Harley. Her stay was longer than we anticipated, but we were so fortunate to have the same two doctors, Dr. Sam and Dr. Abraham, looking after her day and night throughout the weekend. They called us twice a day with updates, which was such a comforting and unexpected surprise. Their dedication to Harley’s care meant everything to us. The ICU techs were also incredible, treating Harley like their own and making sure we were welcome during our visits. Harley was much sicker than we realized, needing an NG tube, IVs, blood work, and scans, but knowing she was in such capable hands made the longest weekend of our lives a little easier to bear. On Monday, we received a text from Jamie, the Internal Medicine tech, with a picture of Harley and details about her day. It gave us so much hope, especially knowing that Dr. Hoh, with her incredible expertise, was involved. Dr. Hoh spent 30 minutes on the phone with me, going over Harley’s illness and care plan in a way that was both honest and reassuring. She called us every day for three days with updates and results, and it meant the world to us. Kayla, the night ICU tech, was just precious. She tolerated our late-night visits and cared for Harley with so much love and kindness, truly wanting her to get better just as much as we did. After five nights, we were finally able to take Harley home on Wednesday. We’re not sure she would have made it without the incredible care and effort everyone put in to help her. No words can fully capture how much this team means to us for saving our girl and taking such good care of us, too. To each of you—thank you. I may not remember all of your names (and I’m so sorry for that!), but Ryan and I will forever be grateful for all you did for Harley and for the other pets you care for every day. We love you all.

When our pup got a cancer diagnosis from his primary vet we felt so lost and scared. The oncology team at HoT helped us navigate our options and gave us an extra year with our pup. Staff came to know and care for our dog and he came to love seeing them. Staff is so friendly and understanding, very knowledgeable and answers questions honestly (even the hard ones) We ended up here in the middle of the night to let our guy rest, Dr was very kind and gentle.
