How to Save Money at VCA North Plano Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just finished my vet appointment and was hit with a surprise $300.60 bill. I was referred here by Operation Kindness and had free wellness exam visit which is why I came initially for and to meet the vet to see if I liked them. I actually liked both the vet and the vet tech assistant, but I did not appreciate them performing services without asking me if I was okay with their pricing information first. I was misled and misguided into thinking the services were covered by the certificate. I wouldn’t have been okay with paying for the services had I been told up front what the price was. There are other vets that are closer to me that are more affordable and also provide great care and offer late appointments. I was apprehensive about going to a new vet as it was and it was exactly for this reason. My sister went to VCA in Flower Mound and they didn’t just run services without asking and this was for my cats litter mate so the circumstances were the exact same so there is no justification for this being done. This is exactly why vets and other medical fields get a bad rep, for clinics like this that just hit you with a bill before quoting you. They also tried to get me to sign up for a yearly contract for a care membership and this would take care of most of the costs in clinic. So they basically want to try and force you to pay a high amount or pay them for a yearly membership and make it to where paying monthly for a year for this membership is more beneficial than paying for the services performed. I really am extremely unhappy with the way this appointment ended and am so disappointed vet clinics still do this nowadays. I’d rather drive to Carrollton and go to VetSavers with a clinic that I’ve been with for years or got to Van Alstyne’s Vet clinic since they’re closer than come here. I can get a whole package that includes all kitten services for 3 vet visits and includes vaccines, nail clippings, fecal tests, deworming, felv/five test, HW preventative and a free first exam for $299 at VetSavers, why would I pay $300.60 JUST for first visit here for these services?! If this is just for a first checkup, I’d HATE to see how they would hangdle a sick visit or emergency visit and how much they would charge!!!!

I have had the best experience at VCA Plano. The entire staff is always so welcoming and treats my dog like a family member. It's always easy to get an appointment and never have to wait to be seen. I really appreciate the care they provide!

PLEASE DON'T come to this animal hospital. Worst animal clinic ever. The doctor does not care her patient. What she only care is how to making money from you by ordering many unnecessary tests, or tricking you to buy their annual $600 wellness care program after you told them that you do not have money to pay ~$800 unnecessary tests. We visited this vet hospital twice. Each time we came there, there were no other patients in the clinic. After our poor visit, we visited a DIFFERENT vet called Parker Animal & Bird in Plano. They prescribed the medicine treatment without ordering any tests. We only paid the copay. After my dog took the medicine for about 10 days, he totally recovered. We will NEVER go to VCA again.

I cannot say enough good things about this team! Our cat has had some rare medical problems, and Dr. Foster has been so helpful throughout the process. She is thorough and caring, spending hours on the phone with us explaining our options. Thank you Dr. Foster for everything you do!

VCA was exceptional with working us in, being patient with my anxious dog, and explaining everything to me in detail. Vet bills are expensive so it’s nice having a vet that’s willing to really talk you through it all and make sure you’re doing only what’s needed for your pet. Love this vet! Dr.Kit is ours and she’s been nothing short of amazing!
