How to Save Money at VCA Hometown Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am extremely disappointed with the service at VCA Hometown Animal Hospital. Recently, my 12-year-old dog had an issue with his foot that had been going on for a couple of days. When I called early in the morning, they had an available appointment the same day at 2:00 pm. However, instead of seeing my dog as scheduled, they insisted I take him to their emergency clinic, which felt unnecessary and like an attempt to have me spend more money. We even signed up for their monthly plan, but we will be canceling all plans and going somewhere else that more of a responsible bedside manner. I explained the situation and emphasized his age, but I didn't feel like I was listened to or that my dog's care was prioritized. This is not the first time we've had a less-than-satisfactory experience, but we decided to give them one last chance. Unfortunately, this experience has confirmed that we will no longer be taking our pets to VCA Hometown. We trust our pets deserve better care and attentiveness.

When my aging dog—who has received years of care from VCA—needed what could have been her final appointment, I was refused even the possibility of getting her in for a same-day visit. This was deeply disappointing, especially given the circumstances. I understand there are staffing shortages and that veterinarians are stretched thin, but the way this was handled made me feel like they didn’t care. Instead of offering any form of compassion or attempting to find a solution, I was simply diverted to an affiliated urgent care that would have been significantly more expensive, and this was during regular business hours. While I recognize that sometimes referring clients to urgent care is necessary, the way this message is delivered matters. I felt dismissed and unimportant as a long-time customer. What truly solidified my decision to end my relationship with VCA was when I showed up at the clinic, hoping to plead for a last-minute squeeze-in while I was already driving there. Upon arrival, I was greeted with, “I can’t believe you showed up after our conversation earlier,” as if my effort to seek care for my dog was inappropriate or unwarranted. This interaction left me feeling more disrespected than I’ve ever been at a vet. It’s been a challenging few days—my family just welcomed a baby on Friday, I was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday, and by late Sunday, my dog’s health took a turn. I called first thing Monday morning, hoping for help, only to be told that they wouldn’t even try to schedule her or keep me informed if a cancellation opened up. After this experience, I will never patronize another VCA establishment. While I’m grateful to those staff members who have provided care over the years, this experience has left me with no confidence in VCA’s commitment to its customers. Edit: Dr. Miner did reach out to me directly to discuss the event and was very compassionate and understanding, I do appreciate that she took the time to reach out to me personally.

As a first time pet owner and first time dog owner, I am very grateful for VCA and their staff. Their kindness and patience is beyond what I expected, considering I’m 36 years old, getting a pet for the first time. My first few months with my dog have been up and down but they are so helpful with making sure our Simba gets the best care. Thank you all!

Dr. Ramirez and all the staff members at VCA Hometown Animal Hospital are wonderful! This has been my vet since 2013, and they have taken such excellent care of my pets. Dr. Ramirez always takes the time to listen and to answer my questions. When my 18-year-old cat recently passed away, he and the other staff members were so kind and compassionate. I highly recommend them!

Putting a beloved member of your family down is never easy. I accompanied my mother in law for the appointment to put her dog down. It was nice not having to be in a surgical/treatment room for this appointment. When we went in they had a plate of all kinds of goodies for him and went above and beyond to make a horrible decision to have to make as good as it possibly could be. Everyone was very professional and compassionate. I was very impressed. I’ve taken our dog here for a Saturday emergency appointment several years ago and was impressed at that visit, too.
