How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is the first time I’ve ever written such a negative review as I usually only write reviews when I’ve had great experiences, but I’m hoping to save other pet owners from the mistake I made. I used their “free” appointment deal to get my new kitten from shelter in to be checked out, mainly to get his rabies shot and some revolution for his incessant itching, which I thought was fleas from the shelter. The only positive thing I can say is that the nurse who helped us was very kind and informative, but the doctor was a joke. They took the kitten in the back with no warning and then wouldn’t bring it back out to us as we waited in a room for almost an hour, which was very stressful for me because there was no reason why I thought they should be keeping my baby kitten back there for so long while I listened to other animals in the back too, howling and crying. By the time the doctor got there after waiting for so long I was a little bit frantic about the fact they had hijacked my pet with no warning and I asked why he was back there for so long. She said, “Oh you want your cat back?” and then disappeared. Those were the only words I got to hear from the “doctor.” She never introduced herself to me, she never gave me any information about my pet. She just disappeared and I never saw her again. The nurse came back, gave me some revelation and told me the cat was positive for roundworm. I was charged what I felt like was an overpriced amount for a stool sample and the medication to deworm. In the meantime, within 2 days of coming home, it was obvious my cat had RINGWORM (fungal - completely separate from the roundworm) and ear mites. I noticed the patches when I brought him to Banfield, but thought it was itching from the fleas, and surely they would’ve done a full examination after taking him in the back away from me and keeping him so long with the other animals in the back. Nope. I’ve had other pets all my life, and I’ve never dealt with such an unprofessional situation at a vet office. They wouldn’t do an examination in front of me, the doctor couldn’t even take the time to speak to me, and they claimed that they had “to work me in” when I made an appointment online; I shouldn’t have been a work in. Maybe that’s why they kept my cat in the back for so long with no word to me, but still that’s no excuse. It’s pretty sketchy that they won’t do an examination in front of you. I ended up having to spend a lot more money to take it to another vet to get all the conditions diagnosed that should have been found in the hour long back room examination at Banfield. The free appointment coupon gimmick really got me in the end. I would advise any pet owner to NOT go here.

We love and cherish the team from Banfield. They are always friendly. Explain all they going to do before it's done. Take good care of our furbaby. Keep up the good work folks. And thanks again for y'all services. ❤️❤️

Pretty good. I prefer to stay with pet rather than drop off. This way I can ask questions if need be. The vet techs seem to be pretty awesome.
