How to Save Money at VCA Metroplex Animal Hospital & Pet Lodge

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

From the moment we got there with our beloved Mimi, the staff greeted us with a smile. Extremely professional and calm. We had to make a very tough decision that night we visited and the staff was so helpful, so sweet and caring. I’d recommend my family and friends to visit here on a regular basis or emergency. Such wonderful people. Not to mention the establishment was nice and very clean. Thank you for everything! Keep up the amazing job everyone!!

Dr. Martinez saved my cat's life back in July of 2020 (right in the middle of COVID) when I arrived after hours around 8 PM. She kept us updated all through the night and early AM on her condition which thankfully improved and was truly a crises that could have killed her. That same cat is now 19 years old in (2023) and will soon turn 20. The total bill for her overnight intensive care she received was much lower than I expected (

We took our 4-year old beagle, Daisy, to this location for a very unsightly impacted anal gland. This was around 8:30 pm. Dr. Martinez and the staff were great. She explained the condition and treatment clearly, provided an itemized estimate for the cost of the care, and kept us updated through the night on her status when she had to spend the night. We feel like we can trust this provider with Daisy’s care and we really appreciate the extra mile they go to communicate with us.

I followed a friends advice and brought my pup here. First it was to have him seen because he fell off the sofa. Vet prescribed him anti inflammatory to give him for 2 weeks. After 1 week of being on the pills we noticed he wasn’t eating. We called and was advised to mix his kibble with some wet food. That seemed to work. We also wanted to speak with the doc and was told he wasn’t on shift but to text him. We received a response 2 days later. Why would they suggest we text him knowing he was off of work? We called out of concern and not just to randomly text the vet. They should have connected me with a vet on duty. We then discontinued giving him the pills. Two weeks later my dog still isn’t eating right and has vomited multiple times through the night. I brought him back in this past Saturday and was seen by a different doc. She shared that it’s probably just the “perfect storm” of falling and being on anti inflammatory that has contributed to him being sick and gave him an anti nausea injection and 4 pills to take home with me. She also did a parasite test via a rectal swab. Four days later and my dog has been dry reaching. I called them today (4 days after my visit) to look for guidance and to find out what the result was from the parasite test. Why do I need to call for a result? Why couldn’t someone proactively call me? I was told it was negative and the girl suggested we bring him in. I explained that I’ve spent close to $800 in the last few weeks at the vca and I wasn’t going to bring him in to have another hefty bill when the doc should have been able to identify what the best treatment should have been when I brought him in last. She said she would call me back. What do you know…. I didn’t receive a call. This place is just poorly managed and over priced. They might be able to see you quick but I wouldn’t waste my time here. There’s a reason why they see you quick. Read between the lines.

Very pleased with the service we received recently for our cat, KoKo Chanel. They absolutely love her and we love the compassionate workers that take their time, with our cats needs. They never fail to check up on our cat after an exam or surgery visit.
