How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Placed my puppy on the large scale when he had only had one parvo shot. He's a puppy and could get parasites or worse. Incompetent receptionist's. When I called to inform the manager she brushed me off and made the excuse that they clean the scale regularly. I've been in the clinic multiple times and have never once seen it cleaned and it wasn't cleaned before my puppy was placed on the scale. I won't be renewing my plan because of this clinic.

My husband brought in a rescue puppy to this facility and the doctor told him that she was no younger than 10 weeks old and had worms. they gave her medicine and a shot. 3 days later we got a second opinion and learned that she was actually 7 weeks and shouldn't have been vaccinated because she was so sick. I believe instead of pushing an insurance package and actually paying attention this could have been prevented. Naturally, I am pushing for a full refund. My husband paid 227 for a bunch of lies and an agenda. If i could give no stars I absolutely would.

Carl was a healthy, feisty, and affectionate 3 year old Tuxedo boy. On December 21, 2021 he was due for a routine dental check up. He was prescribed sedatives before the visit, and the vet called out about 10 minutes before the appointment. We were told to take him back home. No one saw to him that day he was sedated. There was no after care offered, no one called to check on him or even mention what we should look out for or be aware of. A few hours later he passed, quietly and alone. He left behind his sister Lali that misses him every day and waits for him by the window. I am beyond devastated at this loss and profoundly hurt by the lack of care he received that day. I wasn’t offered so much as an apology. I will NEVER bring any pet I care about back to Banfield and I urge you to be weary as well. You don’t want this pain.

This particular Bansfield off of Bunker Hill is amazing. I've been using them to take care of my doggo since I found him. You guys do an amazing job and are always courteous and accommodating. Keep it up! I have no hesitation recommending this place.

Don’t be fooled by their reply here. They didn’t respond to the email I sent to Banfieldcares. I thought it would be good to have my dog established with pet smart so I could get her nails trimmed because she fights. The vet at my location is Banfield. I didn’t do my research. I brought my dog in for shots and an ear infection. We waited past the appointment time which is not unusual. They asked what my concerns were. Shots, ear infection, desperate help with toe nails. They were very vague about what would happen and pricing. I was on my lunch break, running behind on time. We were given a room and the tech took my dog back for “tests”. 25 minutes later I’m getting irritated. The tech brought her back, said her ears were clear. What? The tech left again for 25 minutes. When they came back I asked exactly what had been done. All of it except the heartworm shot and nail trim. What? The tech did her best. I don’t blame her. But, Compared to my bill, they explained nothing. I asked why this couldn’t have been done in the room with me. Well it’s a lot of poking and prodding. Seriously? They did catch the ear infection. I never saw a vet, just got charged a lot of money for things that were not disclosed beforehand and not explained after. I was already irritated and they rushed me out. Then my dog had a reaction to whatever cheap manufacturer shots they gave her. They thought I would just bring her in and browse the store while I was worrying if my dog was going to die. I made it clear my dog wasn’t leaving my arms and I finally got to see a vet who kissed my butt. 3 days later my dog has made it through. If you honestly care about your pet, don’t take them here.
