How to Save Money at Decatur Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Gave my cat wrong med of a dog antibiotic . Didn't even call to let me know that my cats med was still there until I called 3 days later to inform them that he was doing very bad . They then let me know i had meds there paid for that i could pickup.and that it ws 30 min til close so if iwanted to bring him up there it would be an emergency visit charge . I told them he has been taking an antibiotic already they gave me .. Ended up in ER that night and almost died due to organ overload . The 2 visits to ERs that saved his life cost me thousands of dollars . Went to let him know what happened and was told he didn't care and that I shouldn't have picked up someone else's meds . Funny that the dogs name is Baby and my cats name is Babe. . They gave me the wrong antibiotics , not my grabbing someone's. He proceeded to point fingers at me for not looking closer and informing them I had a dogs meds . I noticed weeks later after better while putting them away . Only 4 of the 20 left . 500mg 2xday of cephelexin . He was extremely rude and not caring that we experienced trauma because of their negligence . They should have at least offered to look at him when I called if they knew they didn't give me his antibiotics out of fridge . I can't go back there and get them myself . I thought that he might want to know so it could be watched in future . Didn't want refund of $600 I paid to them but just letting them know and the reaction from him ws appalling to say the least . Blaming me for their lack of care . He literally said "so what , I don't care !!! " Woooq, that blew my mind for a vet to behave in this disturbing manner . I truly hope this never has to happen again . All I have to say now is , he's very lucky that my cat did not die .. and thanks for the debt I've incured because of you and the horrible nightmare of events me and my precious boy Babe had to go through.

The vet and the vet-techs are amazing, sweet, honest and fair. The front desk however… could use some serious improvement. The lady with black curly hair was slightly rude, and when multiple people came in asking how long the wait would be, she was very dismissive and condescending, instead of caring and empathetic. When you arrive and sign in, I think it would be fair to give the client an estimate of how long they will be waiting. We waited 2 hours with our car running and nearly ran out of gas. I understand it’s a slightly unpredictable timeline when waiting for the vet, but I feel that our time could be respected a little better. At least tell people if they’ll be waiting more than an hour, especially in the peak of summer when some people don’t have quality AC in their vehicles. Special thank you to the techs and vets that are doing an amazing job and truly care about the well-being of our animals.

Earlier this week I had to put down my dog of almost 10 years. :( While I was there, they gave us the comfort & privacy we needed in his last moments. I want to thank one of the vet techs for bringing her own lunch to him along with some chocolate donuts so he could enjoy one last delicious meal. I also want to thank Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith has been the absolute best vet I could have ever asked for and has always been the most knowlegable vet I have gone to. Even though Gunner is no longer with us, I know you gave him the best vet experiences over the last 9 years that you could have. Thank you all again for being here for us and taking care of us in the hardest moments. -Katy D

Our puppy somehow cut her nose & it wouldn't stop bleeding. I called this establishment & they advised me I could just walk in. I arrived & walked in with Lainey. The receptionist said it would be about a 30 minute wait & to wait in my vehicle, someone will come out to grab us. A vet tech came out & grabbed Lainey. About 20 minutes later they came out & Lainey had gotten 3 staples. She told me to go inside to pay before leaving. The price was very reasonable. The receptionist said I need to come back in 2 weeks to remove the staples & then I left. The staff is friendly. The only thing I dislike is having to wait in my vehicle while they examined Lainey. I like to ask questions & know all of the different options.

I have gone to Decatur Vets for a few years. As a disabled person on fixed income they have amazing prices. They treated my senior baby Sadie great and when she had to be put down at 18 years old they were so kind and compassionate. My new furbaby has had two surgeries and they are amazing staff and doctors. Only thing I would change is they need to fix walkways. I had a bad fall because of it. Otherwise 5 stars
