How to Save Money at North Tollway Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

10/02/2023. Thank you Stephanie and Dr. Murray for your kindness in helping my little girl, Smokey, across the Rainbow Bridge. Stephanie, Kim and the front staff are great. But vet care is just really impersonal. I never saw the same vet twice. Recently, I got a text from an unknown number that said "bloodwork looks good". Just a generic text, no phone call. My cat and I both had bloodwork the same week so I had no idea if it was for me or for my cat. (It was for my cat.) Vet care again, just impersonal. I have spent around 2500.00 at this vet in the 2 1/2 years since my cat had become ill. I have not received a peep of condolence at all. I don't feel like they even care. I won't be back.

Phyllis always gives our girls a wonderful groom. She is a very loving gentle woman and takes special care with our 16 year old.

I am writing this review with a heavy heart and utter disappointment after my recent visit to North Tollway Pet Hospital, a place I had entrusted with the care of my beloved pets for several years. Today's experience was not just an eye-opener but a painful stab to the trust and respect I held for this establishment. My dog had been suffering from a bleeding paw for a few days, which led me to seek immediate medical attention from North Tollway Pet Hospital this morning. Initial interactions were standard, and the process of dropping off my dog went without incident. The real issue began when I received a follow-up call from one of the technicians, updating me on my dog's evaluation and confirming my poor pup was indeed dealing with an infection. Naturally worried, I inquired if they intended to wrap his paw, considering the bleeding and the diagnosis. This question, simple in nature and obvious considering the circumstances, led to an experience that I still find hard to digest. The male technician, believing he placed me on hold, left the line open. What followed was nothing short of humiliating. I could hear him, crystal clear, utter the words, "Oh god, she's one of those," before proceeding to engage in a disparaging conversation about me with the vet. Their words were not just unprofessional; they were outright disrespectful and showed a lack of compassion that's unthinkable in a profession dedicated to care and empathy. Confronting him after he returned to the call was a matter of standing up for myself, though his apologies fell on deaf ears. How could I accept an apology when moments ago, I was the subject of ridicule for showing concern for my pet's well-being? This experience has irreparably tainted my view of North Tollway Pet Hospital. It's more than just about finding a new clinic to care for my pets; it's about the principle, the expected standard of care, and basic human decency. The lack of professionalism and empathy displayed has led me to decide never to return to this clinic. To those seeking veterinary services: please consider this an account of how clients are treated behind "closed doors" and weigh your options carefully. Your pets are family, and both you and your furry loved ones deserve to be treated with respect and compassion, something that, based on my experience today, North Tollway Pet Hospital severely lacks.

Dr. Maxwell and the whole staff at North Tollway Pet Hospital are awesome! We've been taking our two black labs there for 12 years. They really care about the pets they treat. Recently our 12 yo lab had surgery and wasn't feeling well a week post surgery. Dr Maxwell met us after hours on a Saturday, on his way out of town, to give us meds for him. He also sent follow up texts to check on him. I 100% recommend them to anyone who needs a vet.

I have been taking my cat Dillon, there for about 2 years (she is only 3), and they are always professional, prompt and friendly.
