How to Save Money at VCA Bedford Meadows Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A vet that truly cares. On a Saturday morning I found my cat being really lethargic. I called them that morning to see if they had any appointments and they were able to fit me in. When I came in, everyone was welcoming and patient with us. Once Dr. Cote inspected my cat she sent us straight to an emergency vet. I am very appreciative of her compassion and professionalism.

I am giving them a one star because I can’t give them any less. I am extremely disappointed with the lack of care and professionalism shown by this vet office. Last week I took my first dog I’ve ever had here. I was worried because it was my first dog, he seemed sad and wasn’t playing so I was worried like anyone would be. They medicated my puppy without giving him a proper diagnosis or any lab work, which only made his health deteriorate further. The fact that they then told me they couldn't do anything to help him the next day is unacceptable. They should have been upfront with me about their limitations and advised me to take my puppy to a professional vet who could provide the necessary care. I will not be returning to this vet office not only did they make me pay almost 500 dollars but they made me lose my dog which has affected me and my family emotionally. The medication was left at the vet. I would strongly advise others to seek care elsewhere for their pets. The veterinary that supposedly attended to my dog was CATHERINE!!!

I have taken my furry companions to VCA Bedford Meadows for more than 10 years. Every visit I and my companions have been treated with care, compassion and grace. I have never had a bad experience. From regular checkups, boarding at the last minute so I could leave town to care for an aging parent, dealing with "Covid Crazy" and end of life care for an aging pet. As care providers, and humans, they are just the best. Binx and I consider them to be family. Highly recommend, 10/10

I visited this hospital in an emergency situation with my father's dog, who had recently passed away. The little guy acted like he was having a stroke. It scared me so badly. I called my best friend and she referred me to this hospital. Dr. Risley walked into the room and diagnosed my little boy, Hercules, with an idiopathic Visibular Episode. He is absolutely an amazing doctor, which clearly has a huge following and experience with the fur babies. He just gained 3 new clients. Inexpensive and very friendly and educated staff. Thank you so much to all of you.

I can't say enough about how great they are at VCA Bedford. We started taking our spoiled little girl Olivia here after our previous vet retired. I was hesitant about going to a multi-location vet because I thought they would be about nickeling and diming me. Not the case here! The entire staff are friendly and caring. They always giving suggestions to help me save on cost, even in the few cases that it was beneficial to go elsewhere. I often need new prescriptions and thought I would have to pay exam fees to obtain. However, it's as easy as a phone call. They review Olivia's file and the need and will write a prescription without having to take her in or charging a fee. They truly give me the feel of my neighborhood vet in a rural county town with one stoplight. I would recommend them to anyone any day of the week and twice on Sunday!!
