How to Save Money at VCA Advanced Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Haganey- Top Notch! Love, love, love her!! Creative, Curious, Compassionate, Caring, Comes with with Cool ideas (All the C’s). Gave us more good time and more time for “bucket trips” with The Wonder Dog. My dog adores her as well. Can’t say enough good about her. The other Dr in this practice…flat, unemotional to the point of being curt. missed something due to not testing something that is COMMON with animals with this heath condition. They cost us stress and time with our baby. Didn’t suggest other common treatments that D. H did. This is shocking for “Advanced Animal Care” never mind the prices here.. That is why only 4 stars.

Dr Tracey Hageny is amazing! I have been transitioning my pets to her over the last couple of years. I am so grateful to have found her and VCA after being disappointed by three previous offices while trying to save my cat’s life from FIP. Dr Hageny is genuinely compassionate and takes the time to explain all facets of treatment as well as the mechanism of action and immunology behind medicaments! Fun fact: Dr Hageny also treats chickens! She took my call and gave advice after one of my chickens was attacked by a hawk- Monica (the chicken) is doing well and back to leading her flock. The vet assistants and front office staff go above and beyond to make every appointment so pleasant. Highly recommend!

Right now (Dec 2020) a masked vet tech comes out to your car and picks up your pet, takes it inside, they treat them or run tests and then call you to discuss, like most vets in these covid times. However, Dr. Trussell has been taking care of my cat for 17 years, and I can't say enough good things about her. She is very kind but also to the point and no nonsense. I definitely partially attribute my 3 special needs cats' long lives to her great care. One of my cats has a rare condition that requires special labs and many vets just aren't equipped to deal with it. One of my cats loves vet tech Rebekah (who he has known his whole 16 year life) so much, that he howls to go back when I bring him home from check ups. If you want compassionate, no nonsense, smart, honest vet care (and who doesn't?) definitely check them out.

Not an honest or upfront place. Pet boarding is one of their cash cows - They'll try to squeeze all the money they can from you with exams undisclosed previously. I called the office and spoke to the office manager, I asked in detail their requirements for pet boarding, she said they need to be current on vaccines (which my dogs are) and gave me the daily rates for boarding (they charge more than other places around) When we show up to the clinic with our two healthy pets, we showed our folder with all vaccine records current, they spring on us that they need to do an excrement exam for each of our two dogs at $100 each and another behavioral exam for $50 each. That's $300 before any boarding fees!! Keep in mind none of those fees are listed anywhere on their site as requirements at the time of this review and the office manager never said anything over the phone when I specifically asked. I tried to look at their boarding contract and the file has been removed from their website (see screenshot attached) I requested to speak to the office manager I spoken through the phone and they said she was busy even though there was nobody else in the clinic at that time. The staff seemed indifferent and uncaring. I refused the fees and walked out with my pups and took them to Posh paw resort. They had no hidden fees or exams to try to push on you and everyone was super nice! Best decision ever for pet boarding! Don't support businesses that are dishonest and greedy. Have a great day!

I really appreciate the help and support I received when I was experiencing my fist adopted pet that had worms. The doctor was nice enough to stand outside and answer my stupid questions for like 15 minutes. Easily the most caring and compassionate vet I've ever encountered. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.
