How to Save Money at Central Texas Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It’s been 1 year since Elio was rushed to CT Vet South Austin and this was the only way I knew how to thank the team of staff and doctors who saved his life. I don’t like thinking about that visit because it was heartbreaking but he was in the best hands possible. I’m grateful for this team and that our crazy boy is still with us and is his best self. We joke that his energy is that of 3 cats due to his blood transfusions. Thanks for all you do!

Dr. Krista Adamovich was the best care provider we could have ever asked for. We were so fortunate to have someone with her skill level attend to the care of our dog. I believe all of the staff and technicians provide the best care for all animals that they see. And they make us parents feel okay too! So grateful for Central Texas Veterinary specialty and emergency hospital in Austin.

My experience at Central Texas Veterinary Clinic was by far the worst vet experience I've ever had. I brought in a kitten close to death, and upon arrival, they immediately demanded a $1000 security deposit with no explanation. They wouldn't inform me about the services or their costs, only emphasizing their frustration with the kitten's condition, as if it were my fault. They insisted that without paying, the kitten would die, but refused to explain why. The front desk staff was unhelpful, claiming they weren't doctors when I asked for clarification, the person I spoke to was rude and unprofessional in her demeanor. When I requested to speak to someone else, she responded with 'who?' in a dismissive manner. Eventually, I had to specify that I wanted to speak to anyone but her, as I needed answers regarding the charges and procedures. Unfortunately, despite my compliance, I had to put the kitten down. They even made me take him home in my hands unless I paid for their expensive packages. In another incident a few years back, my brother's puppy injured her arm and was limping. The clinic sent her home with pain medication, attributing it to soreness. We later discovered that her arm was broken and had healed incorrectly, leaving her with a permanent limp. The clinic's only offered solutions were an expensive surgery with uncertain outcomes or amputation. As a result, our dog now lives with a limp. I strongly advise against visiting this clinic. Their prices are exorbitant compared to other clinics, the staff is unprofessionally opinionated, and their practices are disorganized and unethical.

Dr. Nicole Antallfy and the team at the clinic took great care of our cat Mittens, when we brought him in Monday evening. They quickly assessed the situation and started treatment within an hour of us arriving. We received daily updates per phone, and could come in to see him on our own schedule. Everyone was so nice and helpful and made this whole process as pleasant as it could be all things considered. Today we picked Mittens up, and we received very detailed instructions and helpful tips for his care. So far he gobbled up the new cat food, went to the litter box twice, and just took his pill like a champ. Thank you all for everything you did to help our little guy get better. We appreciate you so much! Happy Thanksgiving!

My dog was bitten by a rattlesnake. CTVH staff were amazing with him. They immediately got him into an exam, ascertained the situation and got him started on the appropriate antivenin and pain meds. Without them i don’t know that my dog would still be with us! Highly recommend their services.
