How to Save Money at Small Animal Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My standard poodle had a seizure on a Saturday in late June. They took her back quickly and had her under 24/7 watch until they closed on Monday. All of the staff was so kind and loving to Robin. The doctors made sure to explain everything very clearly to us and let us call at anytime to check on her. They saved my girls life. With additional checkups at her regular vet she is doing well and is back to her normal self. Yes this place is more expensive than a normal vet but it is for emergency care and worth every penny.

I took my 4mo puppy there for a suspected throat injury. I explained clearly how the dogs neck was swollen up like a snake bite 5 days before and now the swelling had traveled down to his abdomen. And that he needed fluids and antibiotics. The vet who was not rude but just not listening had me do x rays and imaging in the back room but not of the areas I had asked for, only on his stomach and asking if he has parvo and not administering fluids or antibiotics when the dog was clearly sick. So I asked to speak to the vet again but was refused, I was asked to pay 600 before we continued and asked to sign a paper if the dog died in their care when they took him to the back room they were not responsible. I asked again to speak to the vet but the vet techs refused my request and wanted to answer my questions directly. I was at the hospital for 4 hours and i was the only person there When I received the images in my email few days later there was none on his neck just confirmation images that he had not swallowed anything in his intestines. So I refused anymore care when the vet would not come speak to me and took the pup home and got antibiotics from a different vet and the pup recovered nicely. I think if I left him at this vet and he was refused fluids and antibiotics for any longer period he would be dead. I do not reccomend this vet hospital. Also the staff didn't relay anything I said to the vet they just nodded their heads and assumed I didn't know what I was talking about.

All this place cares about is $. They don't care about your pet at all. They wanted $2800 upfront,to treat my dog for a POSSIBLE snake bite. Didn't have that so they went down to $1100 for half the treatment!! So no antivenom at all. Makes no sense!! This was yesterday, paid $200, brought the 🐕 home and thank goodness, she's doing fine.

The employee there. Was kind and sympathetic. I had found a kitten sitting in the road. I thought it was sick but to come to find out it had head trauma and was experiencing severe seizures. Even though this was not my kitten, this was very heartbreaking. The employee was very gentle with the kitten. I know that they were doing the right thing and so was I. Truly I am thankful for this place and the people working here.

I bring my dog in this evening due to her having severe pain in her abdoman. No fever, didn't eat anything strange. There are signs up all over recommending people to go to Lubbock, Albuquerque, or Oklahoma City claiming COVID is preventing care. They refuse to do any kind of exam in the room. None, no vet going over the dog, nothing. Everything done out of sight behind a locked door. The vet didn't even want to come in, she kept sending her staff to ask if I authorize this test that will cost this amount, or an ultrasound (which they didn't even have someone there to do those). Normally I am used to being a part of my dogs care and My vet has human conversations with me about options. I get this is all hard and dogs can't talk, but letting a dog who is in so much pain they cant stand walk out the door with "I don't know what is wrong, try your normal vet" and of course reminded they are open all night if something gets worse. No thank you, I'll drive to Oklahoma City. Don't waste your time or money here. Find someone better or take the drive.
