How to Save Money at Carlton Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

In an emergency, my vet was closed due to snow and ice…I totally understand. Jo hurt his eye somehow in this snow. Tiffany, Jo’s Aunt Tip, had started working with Dr Carlton. She asked Dr Carlton if he would see him since my vet was closed. She warned them about Jo’s aggressive behavior, chihuahuas are known for being aggressive. We muzzled him, Tip took him back (they couldn’t do anything with him if I was around), and fixed him up. We went back for a follow up, since it was Dr Carlton who worked with him when this happened. I can’t remember if it was the follow up or the next visit that Dr Carlton took his muzzle off and was able to work with him without it. (I had to muzzle him before I walked in the office at our old vet.) Jo hasn’t had one on at the vets office since…still does at home if I have to put meds in his ears or mess with his feet and such. Jo had been going to our old vet since he was a few months old. He had just turned 11 about 4 months before his 1st visit with Dr Carlton. He is now 13. I wish I had found this veterinarian years before. Never would I have thought he would whine and cry and jump at the window when we pulled up at the vets office excited to see his Aunt Tip and be a good boy for the Dr. I HIGHLY recommend Dr Carlton and his crew. I have nothing against our old vet at all, this is just a better fit for my Little Jo. Thank you for always listening and understanding Jo as well as me! We love you guys!!!

We love Dr. Carlton and his staff. My dog hates the vet and the smaller office makes it less stressful for him. I appreciate the personal service that we receive and we will continue to use this office for all of our veterinary needs for my cat and dog.

Although I have known Dr, Carlton and his family forever I didn't always take my fur babies to him until after my dog sustained an eye injury in a cage while being treated at another clinic and the doctor there just kind of blew it off and I never went back. Dr. Carlton and his staff are the best. One of my fur babies, Puddy, was attacked possibly by a coyote but got away. She had puncture wounds on her back and almost lost one back leg but was able to get away from whatever it was that attacked her. Dr. Carlton had her fixed up in no time. He is soft spoken and gentle with his patients. and the ladies that work with him are just as kind. She goes back for a checkup in a couple of days but is doing great. Now when the sun goes down, she will not step outside the door unless I go out with her. Puddy is the gray and white one. The other one is her sister, Shugga. When I got them, they didn't even have their eyes open and I fed them with an eye dropper. I highly recommend Carlton Animal Clinic and will never take my babies anywhere else..

Friendly, knowledgeable, and punctual. Clearly cared for the well-being of my dog, made sure I had an opportunity to ask questions, and didn't force any "extras". Definitely found a good veterinarian here.
