How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog injured her back while playing last night, so we took her to VEG Franklin, as I had heard about their open floor plan business model, which really appealed to me. They got us into a treatment area within minutes, offered us water or coffee, and began getting her vitals within the first 10 minutes. The vet got on the floor with her to do the exam, which was thorough, but extremely gentle. She involved us in the process, showing us where she was most sore (her whole spine), and even took a look at a lump on her gums at the same time. After coming up with a treatment plan, the tech came over to give Tipsy 2 injections to make her comfortable and bring down inflammation. To do this, she had to pretty much sit in a windowsill, so that Tipsy didn’t have to move. I have had to use emergency vets a couple of other times, and have never had such a positive, calm, and quick experience. I know that pets can sometimes act up if owners are present, so I appreciate even more the level of care that they provide here when owners and pets are at our most nervous. Huge thank you to them. Thanks to them, she was able to get quick, low stress treatment. (Unrelated, they had a cool armadillo statue)

we drove 2.5 hours to this clinic because she was the closest person that would take a bearded dragon at 2am. he is missing a chunk out of his bottom jaw and his bottom lip is detached. during the exam, they kept him very warm and comfortable. they were all extremely kind and had heat lamps on stand by specifically for reptiles. the two women we dealt with were extremely patient during the entire visit and helped us figure out options to pay for everything. we are so thankful for everyone there ❤️

Veterinary Emergency Group was an amazing place. We got prompt service with our kittens being looked at immediately! Everyone was polite, professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Although it luckily turned out that we were just over protective of our kittens and nothing was wrong the comfort we got knowing they were checked out and were good was an immense relief! Our kittens got a thorough exam. Everyone answered all our questions thoroughly. We were able to stay with our kittens the entire visit. Excellent price for emergency services. I hope we never have another pet emergency but if we do we will be going straight to VEG. Highly recommended! Dr Andrew Cone and his staff were amazing.

If I could give a 6-star review, I would! My fur baby Henry had a seizure that lasted 4 minutes, and we were terrified because it was his second one in less than 13 hours. When I called to tell them we were on our way, the sweet woman on the phone assured me they would be ready for him. When we arrived, they were waiting at the door to greet us. The veterinarian got down on the floor and was so gentle with Henry. Everyone was quick and provided thorough information to my husband and me. We live in Columbia, but if we ever need emergency care again (hopefully not), we won't go anywhere else!

We are so thankful for VEG! They were so incredibly kind and supportive through a very scary few days. Our cat, Leo, experienced a medical emergency and the cause was unknown but our regular vet treated him initially and advised us to go to VEG for 24/7 care for him. He was admitted with no clear prognosis but they took excellent care of him and kept in constant communication as they treated him. We had just lost our older cat and experiencing this so soon after felt traumatic which made us even more sensitive and worried. Luckily they sent us photos, updates, and answered every question we had completely. After he was discharged we called to ask a question about his medication late at night and the overnight doctor spent several minutes talking to us and checking in — beyond just answering our question. We could tell how much they genuinely cared! Leo ended up making a full recovery after a few more days at home. When I called to get a receipt for our pet insurance the kind nurse who answered the phone remembered Leo and asked about how he was doing. The VEG staff were angels and we couldn’t sing their praises more! You can trust that your animals will be throughly cared for and treated here!
