How to Save Money at Animal Care Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place claims to have emergency services available around the clock, but they don't. I called the after hours emergency number and the vet who I talked to refused to treat my pet. She said she "wasn't available to come in tonight." If you offer emergency services and someone calls your after hours emergency number, you can't suddenly decide to not offer that service because you don't want to come in the office. My cat was really sick. I ended up taking him to Northern Plains, who did meet me for an after hours visit and they took great care of him. He could have died, had I waited because he was dehydrated and then started vomiting. He was also having respiratory distress. I will be reporting this business for false advertising and the vet for endangering an animals life. I recommend going to Northern Plains. The vet there was very nice and saved my cat's life.

I took my dog in for mobility issues concentrated in one leg; Dr. O'Neill barely touched her, diagnosed arthritis, and prescribed painkillers. I ended up taking her to another vet who actually palpated the leg and quickly identified either a bone tumor or a partially healed fracture. Both conditions are quite painful and the dog was old and frail, so we did not pursue a precise diagnosis or aggressive treatment, but tried to give palliative care to keep her comfortable. Sadly she had to be euthanized four days after the second-opinion visit. Before the incident above, my rating for the clinic probably would have been 3 stars. Some of the problems may be related to the older building near WalMart that they are moving out of now, but overall I feel like these evince a lack of caring and thoughtfulness for patients and clients: *Office cats free-roam the waiting room. I like cats just fine, but this stresses out pretty much all dogs and probably a lot of cat patients too, before they even get into the exam room. *The waiting room and exam rooms were very cramped and uncomfortable. The waiting room lacked any sort of visual barrier for reactive or fearful pets, and at our last visit there wasn't even a chair in the exam room - had to put my purse on the floor. *Zero privacy - due to the lack of space, staff often didn't close the exam room door and everyone in the waiting room could hear what was going on in there. Last time I was there, someone on staff verbally trashed a client who'd just left. She was in the "back office" area and talking to a co-worker, but was quite audible in the waiting room. *The building was generally not clean and smelled like a litter box. -------------------------- Before the "arthritis" visit, I knew my dog was approaching her time for euthanasia. The thought of having to do it in this clinic, given all of the factors above, seriously compounded my stress levels during the last month of her life.

My favorite thing about this clinic is that the entire staff LOVES to interact and love on the animals! The entire staff has great service and are extremely knowledgeable! Emergency service is available and I have no doubt it's out of love for the animals, not money! I LOVE this place! It's a really neat atmosphere with resident cats milling around and a nice little pet food store!

My daughter called after hours on July 8th about her kitty child. And the lady on call says that it's probably just constipation without even checking our girl out and says bring her Monday if she's not better. My daughter's girl passed away early Sunday July 9th. The lady there didn't care. Don't answer or advertise that your an emergency pet service if you don't truly help the animals. Thanks a lot. Not!!!

I always get my wild pups nails trimmed here! She's pretty hyper and they are great with her.
