How to Save Money at Shandon-Wood Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff at SWAC are fantastic! I originally moved to Columbia for a short 1-year job and intended on just needing the usual vaccines and check up. Well, my poor pup ended up making a few more visits - including one for a nasty abscess she developed that required surgery and an overnight stay. The entire staff was great with her and took such good care to keep me apprised of all options and costs. We were sad to leave the wonderful family at SWAC but know where to go if we are ever in the area again.

I was able to get an urgent appointment quickly when my cat was sick. We were treated with respect and I felt that my pet was properly diagnosed and treatment was appropriate. The staff was awesome and followed up the next day to check on him and the doctor called when the test results came in. I feel confident in Shandon Woods Veterinary Cat Clinic providing the best care possible for my pet!

positives: Professional, Knowledgeable, Dedicated, Friendly, Centrally located, Good communication, Compassionate, Kind, and Flexible scheduling negatives: Higher end of price scale for area, Office is a little dated in some rooms Dr. Sine and her staff always give friendly and knowledgeable care to my dog and cat. The office is open 7 days a week and has after work hours. This is VERY important to me. HIGHLY recommend them. Side note: Dr. Sine diagnosed my previous dog with a VERY rare cancer that 2 other vets had missed. An earlier diagnosis would not have changed her prognosis, but it would have given us more time to give her those last PERFECT days. You can tell a lot about a vet in how they treat your animal on the first day they meet them... and how they deal with helping you say goodbye. Dr. Sine is EVERYTHING you want in a vet.

We recently got a puppy, Louie, who was very sick in the first few days we had him. They were able to get us a same day appointment. Our appointment wasn’t for a few hours and we were worried about our puppy, so they offered to have us bring him in so they could watch him and give him fluids before his vet appointment. Dr. Sine and all of the staff took such good care of him! All of the staff there now know Louie and at his check-up appointments everyone always wants to say hi to him and see how he’s doing. They took such good care of our boy, kept us informed throughout the whole process, and genuinely care and love our puppy. We HIGHLY recommend Shandon Wood Animal Clinic. Thank you for taking such good care of our puppy!

They definitely overcharge you. Was charged $19.80 for 2.5 pills broken into 4 parts. Looked up medication & pills are .38 cent retail with a prescription. Quite the markup & no option for a script given. Charged $80 for a full exam when I came in for a toe injury & $25 for a nail trim & nails were barely trimmed & not buffed. They are open late, office is nice & staff is professional while ripping you off, so I guess that’s a good thing. Edit: Now in less than 24 hours, my dog has a bloodshot eye. I told them about an enlarged blood vessel in his eye once I saw them doing the “exam”. He’s had it for months no issue. Vet said he saw no issue with it. All of a sudden it apparently burst. Not sure if it was the medication or visit. Scared to take him back there after reading the “real” reviews. And to the response, the client shouldn’t have to ask about alternative treatments or pricing. That should be proactively provided & just because I can afford the treatment it doesn’t negate the fact that you are extremely & unnecessarily expensive. I saw nothing that justified it.
