How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have a senior dog that gets very anxious about the vet and can become reactive during visits. We stopped going to our previous vet for this reason, it seemed like every time we went her anxiety would just get worse and it would become very difficult to examine her or give shots. I needed to get her shots up to date so I made an appointment here. The receptionists are very nice, organized, and professional. The vet and the tech that worked with us were also kind and professional. I could tell they are truly great at their jobs and that they really care about pets. They were so patient and my dog eventually warmed up to them a little bit, which shocked me in a good way. She even wagged her tail a few times once the shots were done with. As a new patient they got us set up with a wellness plan and it is very affordable. I can't thank the team here enough for taking care of my dog. She is like my child and I love her so much. The way she was treated made me very happy, and we are so glad we made the switch.

I have been taking my dogs to the Garner's Ferry Banfield for 3 years. One of my dogs recently developed congestive heart failure and was struggling to breathe. I called and they saw her immediately, in the middle of a very busy afternoon. 3 days later, she is much more comfortable and her breathing has calmed considerably. Everyone at this location, from the front desk staff to the doctors, are caring and compassionate. I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for a vet.

I took my two puppies to Columbia Garner’s Ferry Banfield this morning. One, a 7 month old recent shelter rescue, was there for her first vet visit ever. The other, a 1.5 year old pup, was there for the first time at Banfield. Both are around 50 lbs. We were never taken to an exam room. I sat on a bench in the PetSmart with two incredibly over-stimulated 50 lb puppies for over an hour. They were taken back individually for shots and tests, which amounted to maybe 10 minutes each. We were never seen by a vet. The only interactions my pups had were with the receptionists (excellent) and a vet tech who couldn’t manage to give an oral vaccine or scan for a microchip for one puppy. To clarify, the recent shelter adoptee was never seen by a vet. A vet never even spoke to me. I have no idea about the health of my dogs because the vet tech simply left the rabies tag and pills on the bench beside me in the store and said the fecal tests were negative. I got no information about the blood work. I got no information about vaccine side effects. I got no information about the physical health of the shelter pup or my older pup. Meanwhile, an exam room sat visibly empty while my incredibly stressed older dog was left to howl and I was left to manage two puppies. Edited to Add: I posted this review, called the Banfield in question, and emailed corporate. The only action taken was for the Banfield manager to get a vet on the phone with me (NOT the vet who signed off on my dogs' visit mind you). Banfield has a culture of passing the buck so no one is responsible and no one actually remedies a situation.

EXTREMELY convenient and affordable payment plans for keeping your pet vaccinated and protected from fleas, ticks, and heartworms as well as spay/neuter and groomed. There are multiple levels of care as well as flexible payment options that give you the option of when the monthly payments are drafted. The comfort of knowing that if an emergency occurs, we don't have to pay an outrageous vet bill and we can keep our puppy protected and pest free. We were fortunate enough to get a puppy from the last litter our family dog Reesie had before he passed away from heartworms. We were ignorant as to how heartworms are contracted and what they do to animals so this time, with Reesie's daughter Rosie we are able to make sure she's protected and well cared for. WELL WORTH IT!

First time here! Staff were great and explained everything. He was examined and got the prescription we asked for along with prescriptions for issues that were found! They explained how when to use the prescriptions and handed us a packets with everything we needed to know about his issues. They also cut his nails for us. Edit: he’s mocking his boxer sisters smile in the recent photo! Nails by Banfield 😂
