How to Save Money at Oceanside Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hazel acted like a scaredy-cat brat! But the vet; Dr. Lewandowski, was so patient. My ferocious 35 lb (ideal weight; currently on peas & carrots diet bc 39 lbs!) But cute border collie/Boykin mix left with a slightly sore heiney; no desire to eat her dinner which is Tres unusual; but otherwise ready to go for another year. I may need to start a Go Fund me or get the little cutie-pie a job to help pay for her expensive self: vet + 6 mo trio flea-worm meds came to almost $400! And I turned down a couple vet choices of meds. My advice? Make sure you can afford your pets before you adopt them. Does anyone out there need to buy or sell a house!??!! I'm 32 years experienced Realtor. Just saying. 💪🥰💰

We were evacuated to coastal Sc from Asheville after hurricane Helene. The aftermath prevented us from getting to our home and we left without anything, including my pups laundry list of medication. Between the evacuation and being off his medications for a week he was in a bad spot, and I am SO glad I called these guys! They just made everything happen so quick and easy to straighten things out and get replacements of all his meds, even his controlled medication. The best part, when we went in for the cursory visit (only needed since he takes alprazolam and they hadn’t written for him before), we didn’t strop foot inside! My dog has extreme anxiety that’s worsened by an absorption issue in upper gi (which was currently uncontrollabled and unmedicated), and a tech came out saying it was already in their notes that our pup had extreme vet anxiety and offered a “backyard visit”. It was perfect! We walked around to a grassy covered back fenced in yard with nothing in it to make it look like a clinic and the vet examined my dog right there in the grass so he never knew he went to the vet! We left.5 minutes later with the last of his scripts in hand and reassured that there was a group of capable people I could take my dog to while we are here in town waiting for news on our Asheville home! Highly recommend !!!

I adopted two kittens that sort of "fell into my lap", having never owned a cat before. I'm very happy that I chose Oceanside for their veterinary care. They were able work us in for an appointment on short notice. The DMV Dr. Hannah Craig and the LVT Haley were awesome! They answered all of my many questions patiently and thoroughly, which was greatly appreciated. Their enthusiasm and love for animals were very apparent, and the care given was excellent. They contacted me the next day to see how the kittens were doing. I was provided with a detailed, printed care plan. It included dates and prices for all basic care, and any optional care that I'd expressed an interest in. I had no idea what to expect cost wise, this was a first for me. All of the prices seemed very fair and reasonable. I experienced no sticker shock, and no pressure to commit to anything. The practice is clean and efficient, everyone that I dealt with was great, and I have no doubt that they'll treat my new family members as if they were their own. I couldn't recommend them any more highly!

My animals are my babies and I trust Oceanside with their life. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats who have all been seen here both regularly and for emergencies. The doctors are really wonderful and will discuss treatment options with you. April one of the technicians is amazing with my German shepherd who is terrified of getting his blood drawn. My pets aren’t even afraid to go to the vet.

Oceanside is a wonderful and compassionate vet. They always acted in our pet’s best interest and did everything possible to keep him healthy. Although he sadly passed away, they even hand-delivered flowers to us afterward. Thank you for being such a caring and loving facility for all pets.
