How to Save Money at Oak Hollow Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First I want to say that I have had 3 different cats be seen by her and her staff and have had ABSOLUTELY no issues! We recommend them to everyone and our grand cat’s 2 fellow cat roommates are there right now being neutered. We have had appointments at our home and at her facility and always have a great experience. They feel like friends when they come in and treat our cats like they are their own! They respect them and their boundaries…they watch their movements(we have one that is very protective over his younger brother) they respect and catch it all! Their facility is small and is a shed mad into a vet center. Don’t let it scare you! GO INSIDE! There is absolutely no bad smell and it is so unbelievably clean and organized I was shocked to say the least! This is hands down the cleanest vet we’ve ever been too! Because it’s so small your animals also get much 1-on-1 attention which I also see as a huge positive! They aren’t doing 8-10 surgeries at a time with just 2-3 so we can rest assured our furbabies are getting the absolute best care! I will NEVER use anyone else at this point! We actually have a final spay scheduled for next week and look forward to having this done at their facility too!

We were refused service during a emergency. My dog is now deceased. He died an hour after we were turned away the only reason this place got one star was to leave this review. I would never recommend anyone to ever take their pet to this hospital for any reason at all. They should be prosecuted for this. Now I have to bury my friend and co.panion who. I loved dearly. Don't give them your business

We have 3 cats, one of whom is getting older, but all three are not fans of car rides or vet visits (no surprise). I haven’t found any vets in State College who do home visits so I had previously been taking them to a local vet but after a bad experience with that vet, and an urgent issue with a new cat we adopted, we did some major searching and found Oak Hollow Animal Hospital. My husband took the cat in need to her with extremely short notice and she was so kind to fit us in. She got that kitty on track so when it came time for the annual visits, we asked her to come to the house since she also does home visits occasionally! This was wonderful- our cats were so chill and only got slightly perturbed by their shots but overall it was such a better method for getting their shots updated than the half a day ordeal of packing 3 cats into the car and taking them to a vet. She charges very reasonable fees considering all she does for her clients. I also appreciate her personal approach to being a vet and she tried to help pet owners who may not be financially comfortable. She offers alternative solutions that may be cheaper and offers fairly priced medications when needed. She’s also realistic about animal lives and not judgmental, the goal is caring for animals and giving them a good happy life, not prolonging life beyond moral or financial reason. I’m sad we only recently discovered her and we are now moving away, but I can’t recommend her enough! Thanks so much Dr Ashley!

I cannot say enough great things about Oak Hollow and Dr. Ashley. Here is the TL:DR for those of you who don't want to read my long testimonial: Oak Hollow is the most affordable vet care in Centre, Clinton, or Blair counties, and no one cares more about the animals than Dr. Ashley. Ok now for the long testimonial. We are poor grad students in an extremely wealthy town (State College) and our new (to us) cat got his eye scratched, which turned into an infection: his eye clouded over, his pupil wouldn't shrink in light - bad stuff. We noticed this on a Friday late afternoon before a 3 day weekend, and frantically started calling vets in the area. My wife was also 2.5 cm dilated and scheduled to be induced that Monday, so things weren't going great at home. No one would take him as a new patient, and the recommendation was to take him to an emergency care place or a pretty expensive vet here in town who was willing to take a look. The walk in price alone for both places was near the limit of our budget, and the care on top of that was going to hurt (of course we would've done it if needed). So I started calling outside of Centre County and that's how I found Oak Hollow. Although it was 5pm on the Friday of a holiday weekend, Dr. Ashley told me to come by "any time." The hour drive is a lot but Oak Hollow is in such a gorgeous, forested area that it was actually quite pleasant. Dr. Ashley saw our cat immediately and was so nice to him despite him being a little bit psychotic. She has all the equipment of a big city vet and was able to diagnose and treat his eye in her little vet clinic shed. The whole thing, visit after hours plus antibiotic, cost me $40. Compare that to the State College price which was around $600 (no shame to State College Dr's - we just needed Dr. Ashley's price so both us and the cats could eat the next day). Fast forward a few months and our squirrely cats need their annual exam and vaccines. Dr. Ashley tells me her main way that she sees her patients is home visits, since she lives so far away and cats always do better at home than in a car trip and at a strange place. So Dr. Ashley drove over an hour to come to our house and treat our 3 cats, the day after we called her, giving 3 exams and vaccines for $250. Just unbelievable. My disclaimer is I really don't mean any bad things to more expensive Dr.'s, and the main point of this review is to say that I really appreciate how Dr. Ashley understands different financial situations and tries to work with her patients and clients, showing no judgement. One of our cats has a lifelong disease that has a potential cure that costs around $2000; all vets we've ever seen tell us it's absolutely necessary, but also that it is unlikely it will actually solve the problem. That's the only solution they give us, even after we explain we cannot afford it. Dr. Ashley, in contrast, gave us so many more options within our budget: cbd oil, steroid shot when things get really bad, medicine to ease pain, etc. She told me that a lot of her patients are old people who can't afford anything, and she does their appointments for free. Just because she cares so much about the animals and knows the animals mean the world to old folks living alone. She says the people who can afford it just pay it forward and she manages to make ends meet. I think she might be an angel.
