How to Save Money at Kennett Square Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have four cats and take them all to KSVH. I have been pleased with the quality of service we (husband and I) have received for our cats here. I have been to vets before that try to swindle- not the case here. There is no extra charging for unnecessary items and I like the fact that you get an itemized bill. The staff is flexible and allows me to bring multiple cats in for appts at one time- which is great because it’s less trips I need to make with angry cats who do not want to leave the house. I can call the same day and receive refills for prescriptions for my cats. Also Dr. Barnsley is great at handling cats of all temperaments- whether docile, scared, or hostile- he is able to have a positive visit with them and get all the information to check if they are healthy. We also have had to do a few surgeries with our cats, and I was impressed with how fast KSVH saw our cats each time and how fast they came home. Highly recommend!

Doctor Barnsley is a fantastic vet. He relates to and cares for animals in a way most people can't. When he walks into the exam room he's more interested in talking to my pet than me and i wouldn't have it any other way.

Absolutely wonderful vet and veterinarian team. Dr. Barnsley is the only vet that my pack (2 dogs and cat) have loved going to visit. We were absolutely devastated when we lost Bella, our Great Pyrenees, who lived to a ripe old age of 13 under his care...unheard of for this giant breed. It was such a respectful, comforting and caring (but very sad) experience. When we brought our 19 year old kitty, Satchmo, in for a visit because he was losing weight and not eating, we were prepared for the worst. Dr. Barnsley diagnosed him with hyperthyroidism, sent us home with meds and special food. In his six week follow-up (and after Satchmo's first camping trip to NH), I'm happy to say his test results were great, and he also managed to gain a pound. If you're looking for a vet, look no more! Dr. Barnsley is wonderful!

Absolutely amazing vet and team. It is hard to find someone you trust your animals with. Dr. Barnsley is professional, caring, compassionate and loving to every animal that comes through the door. He and his team put in so much love and effort to make animals feel safe every visit and to make sure you understand everything happening with your animal. Many times we have had emergencies and they have always been able to fit us in. My family and I are so grateful to their team for all they do for our animals.

They squeeze every dollar they can out of you with a smile. Don't go here. These people fleeced me for years. Every time my cat got sick (2 to 3 times a year) they'd keep her for 2 to 3 days to "make sure she was eating" before sending her home. Went to another vet finally. New vet gave my cat an actual diagnosis because she ACTUALLY TESTED FOR CHRONIC HEALTH ISSUES based on how often she gets sick. Not just a normal blood panel, the doctor did what doctors are supposed to do and tested specifically for what she thought it was. They sent me me home with a prescription (enough for future flare ups as well) and instructions to treat the symptoms. She started eating again the next day. Now instead of dropping $900 three times a year I paid 400 to be taken care of for the entire year. Not to mention my cat doesn't get shoved in a cage for three days anymore.
