How to Save Money at Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Lack of communication. The ONLY communication they have is email! The office staff is unprofessional. They are never wrong. they insist they leave message’s even though they do not. Do Not assume the office hours are correct. They close early or cancel an appointment without notification. FYI Not only do they keep notes in the file about your pet but keep notes about you 🤷🏼‍♀️. So because I got upset about them not telling me they cancelled my appointment they documented it in my pets file. They argued that they left a message when clearly they did not. They can never take blame. So me not knowing they keep notes, I basically had a bullseye on me every time I walked In there! I felt by them having this information in my file my pet may not have been getting the care someone else is getting. If I knew they did this I would have not gone there for 6 years. Stephanie, the so called manager, is no manager. She wrote me this lengthy email instead of calling me. I stopped in at the office to address the email and get my pups records. When Stephanie didn’t know what to say, she rolled her eyes. This is the professional staff they have working there. All I can say is it is obvious that Dr Mike does not care about his customers or he would talk to them prior to them leaving.

No clue if vet is any good. I didn't make it that far. The front staff had no clue how to communicate with customers. I brought a friend's cat for a appointment and my friend had the wrong day. Instead of telling me that they kept asking me same question leaving the room back and forth until I had enough and asked what the issue was. Then they told me and then ignored me. Instead of asking if I wanted to reschedule or if they could squeeze me in since I was the only one there. Very unprofessional. So I walked out.

I really wanted to like this place since they seemed very friendly but what happened to me bothered me so much I had to switch my vet. I took my 13 year old chihuahua in for a Cushing's Disease test based on a recommendation by Dr. Mike because of my dog's increase in thirst and also an enlarged adrenal gland. I was not told any instruction for this test (i.e. no food or drink after 12 AM). When I dropped off my dog I asked the person if they wanted him to keep his diaper on (he usually has one on) and they said it didn't matter so I left it on. When I went to go pick him up he REAKED of urine. He had a pee pad folded into his diaper that was soaked through. He was literally so full of water that he was making noises that indicated he was uncomfortable. He peed inside the hospital when we put him on the ground, he peed AGAIN before we got into the car, and the whole 30 min ride home he was crying because he needed to pee more to let out more pressure. I had to give him a bath when I got home because the smell was so bad. When I took him out later in the early evening his back legs suddenly stopped working - he could not walk. Later that night all four of his legs stopped working. We looked up side affects of the Cushing's test but nothing mentioned sudden paralysis. We then looked up water intoxication which definitely resulted in sudden paralysis and seizures. I literally took my dog in to see why he had an unquenchable thirst and they let him drink water until it almost killed him. Not to mentioned that I paid for this all day "care." I called MVH to tell them what happened. Dr. Mike said he would investigate and then get back to me. Two weeks go by and no call back. I call them two times within the following week and no call back. I'm very disappointed in my experience here. Dr. Mike seems like a great guy but I just can't put my trust into this hospital again after what they did to my senior pet.

Tried to call in, couldn't get through to even ask about an appointment. Maybe have a person to actually take calls.

Came here on word of mouth, in 2018 when my husky Akasha was suffering with a growth on her side. We had been going to our previous vet, for roughly 8 months and for 8 months they told us it was a lipoma..nothing to worry about. Problem was, it started off as the size of an egg, and ended up being 12lbs of cancerous tumor Dr. Mike took off merely three weeks after meeting us. Not only was he genuinely kind, and loving towards our pup he genuinely cared about our plight with the previous vet. Sadly, even with his miraculous intervention Akasha passed away a few months later. We're sure had we taken her to Dr Mike in the beginning it wouldn't have gotten to this point. We're thankful for his staffs kindness, the facilities impeccably clean rooms, and the love of everyone that got us through the euthanasia. We continue on with our animal care here, and won't ever return to the previous vet.. We simply adore Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital. They have seen 2 cats, and 3 dogs of ours. And each time they've proven even through covid, they're beyond professional. Thank you for this everyone at Mahoning Valley. We as a family love you all.
