How to Save Money at Bush Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The entire staff is fabulous. They are very compassionate and explain procedures and choices for you and your animal. I even received a follow-up call after a couple of days to make sure my four legged little one was OK & I was ok giving meds. etc. Dr. Blystone is great... very thorough and understanding. Highly recommend Bush Animal Hospital.

We found Bush Animal Hosp. after losing our favorite vet (she moved out of state). A year later we lost our Rottweiler prematurely and so we adopted a rescue dog who was in need. Unfortunately we were let down by the clinics we had loved and new ones that came highly recommended. So we turned to Google once more and found Bush Animal Hospital, a place with veterinary care and hospital capabilities. We had a visit with our new Dr. here and not only were the staff amazing the Dr. was truly wonderful too. She was thorough, knowledgeable, and friendly. And I have to say I love that they don’t push unnecessary extras on you. I felt very comfortable with the information and explanations of the exam and findings, it was a breath of fresh air from what we’ve felt lately. We’re confident we chose the right place to care for our little guy. Thank you BAH!

The team at Bush always exceeds my expectations. They are so caring, listen with 100% attention and practice the best and most current medicine. As an AAHA-accredited practice I'm reassured my dog is getting the best care available. If you don't know why AAHA accreditation matters, look it up. Only a small percentage of vet practices go the extra mile to achieve this standard. I won't go anywhere else in Eugene.

This is our first visit to Bush Animal Hospital with our cat and dog for annual exams. So far, so good; the first appointment was 30-40 minutes and included a hands-on physical examination/dental exam, time for questions, review of at-home behavior, weight, food, supplements, and vaccines. They aren't pushy with extra vaccines or flea treatments. The front desk was expecting us and knew our pets' names in advance; it was a nice touch. We picked Dr. Beyerinck for our large German Shepherd; the vet was very hands-on, knowledgeable, and treated a minor infection from a scrape. He also examined our dog's teeth as requested. We picked Dr. Newman for our anxious cat and he was great with her. She seemed to like him. There's also Feliway Cat Calming spray and towels to put over crates in the lobby. Overall, very pleasant experience; prices were reasonable for the level of service your animal received, and the dental estimate was less expensive (and less aggressive/alarmist) than our old vet practice. I hope we don't need to visit often, but glad we are established for ongoing care. Give them a try!

Very supportive staff helping with my high vet anxiety dog. Came in for teeth cleaning and prep to travel internationally. They are certified to do all the prep for her travel records. Great service!
