How to Save Money at Bend Animal Emergency and Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It is very difficult to find emergency exotic pet care, and I hope someday to be able to have ER care for them. I volunteer at our local rabbit rescue and it is an ongoing problem for both the rescue and the adopters. I am so thankful Dr. Bunting was willing to see my bunny tonight. Bunnies are such delicate pets, and you can lose them very quickly. Dr. Bunting was able to triage Basil's possible GI stasis or blockage, so that I would know if it was safe to force fed him until I could see my regular rabbit vet tomorrow. (Rabbits need to continually eat - you cannot fast them, even before surgery. If a rabbit stops eating, it can be life-threatening.) We were also able to give him subcutaneous fluids to help with dehydration. A few hours after we got home, he finally started to eat and move around again. I believe the care we received helped Mr. Basil turn that corner and start feeling better. I've had veterinarians refuse to see rabbits before, so I was very afraid that my bunny would take a turn for the worse if we didn't get fluids and an xray. Without care, you can lose a bunny who stops eating and goes into stasis within 12 -24 hours, so I am very fortunate I got the care we needed. Thank you so much for caring!

Our dog broke his jaw while camping in the area. We called ahead and then brought our pup in. We were treated wonderfully and they took great care of our boy. They were quicker than most emergency vets, compassionate and explained everything extremely well, including the options and their risks. It was the most impressive emergency vet we have ever been to and I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area.

This is the SECOND time within 2 years Bend Animal Emergency has saved my dog's life. Each time I expressed my financial constraints and concerns. Their response? Absolute kindness, NO judgment and transparency. They let me know ahead of time the range of cost and what my options are. My dog had to have emergency surgery and after care. Both surgeons, Vet Technicians and Receptionists went ABOVE and beyond to be kind, communicative and patient with me while I was in distress. This was at 1:00 AM mind you! They treated my senior dog for 4 days at the Hospital and cared for him as if he were their own. During that time they were in constant communication with me and looked after him 24/7. If your pet is in a crisis like mine was and you aren’t sure what your options are, Bend Animal Emergency is the answer. The facility is clean, the staff are very SKILLED and professional. Thank you Bend Animal Emergency for saving my boy (again). - Parker & Rachel

I was so thankful that this facility was open during a recent trip to Bend with my dog. She acquired a limp during one of the hikes we did and I was able to take her in at 7AM on a Sunday for a once over. They took care of her and kept me up to date, all while dealing with the actual emergencies that were coming in. The cost breakdown seemed quite reasonable compared to her standard vet and they had meds on site so I was able to leave with everything I needed. Added bonus- it's in a comfortable parking lot so I didn't feel weird about reading in my car for a couple hours. Thank you!
