How to Save Money at McKinney Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I don't want to knock this place too hard because the reception employees are beyond awesome and that is what keeps this from being a 1 star review. We were visiting the area while traveling for a few weeks camping and our 1 dog, Henry Ford, looked like he had an ear infection. So we called our home vet for advice and they suggested we get him in right away at a local vet to check the ear drum. My husband called this facility and they got us in within hours. The facility itself is well-maintained and well-stocked with pet supplies. The receptionists, including Tracy, were very nice. The issue we had was the vet- Dr. Knox. I am not quite sure if she was having a bad day, a bad week, doesn't like her job, or what but there was a complete lack of interpersonal skills with humans and animals. I know that people who work with animals probably like animals more than humans so I don't expect fantastic skills with humans but there was nothing even with our dog. Dr. Knox was extremely serious and appeared annoyed with my questions about Henry's infection and treatment. She never once happily patted Henry or interacted with him. My husband held him while she checked his ear. She did not give Henry any positive words or smiles after she checked his ear and gave him the drops. I mean, I was shocked at how detached she was as a vet towards our dog. So, I gave him lots of positive words and said we would get him a cheeseburger after the visit. You would think that I told him I was going to poison him with her reaction to giving him human food. Seriously?! Yes, we feed him dog food but we also give him treats. I am sure many pet parents do. I told my husband after we left that I would never come back to this clinic again if we had to see Dr. Knox.

Important information! My experience with McKinney’s was top notch. The staff was so full of genuine hospitality and professional courtesy. We arrived early and was directed right to a room right away. Even though we was in a room the ladies kept me updated and informed every step of the way.

We have 2 dogs, a boxer and lab. Both 4 yrs old. Our dogs do not mind going there for their visits. People there are always polite and willing to help. Always make time to work in an appointment and when need to make arrangements for our dogs to stay overnight.

5 STARS!! If I could give 100 stars I would! We are new to the area and our baby had been throwing up for 2 days, we didn't have a new vet yet and we called at 7 am and we were able to bring our girl in right away. We saw Dr. Metcalf and she is the sweetest and most down to earth veterinarian I've ever met! She answered all of our questions and treated our girl right away. She asked if she could run some blood work and even gave us the cost upfront before doing anything. She got right down on the floor with our girl and was very gentle with her & even praised her for being a good girl. We have found our new vet family. Thank you so much Dr. Metcalf and staff for being so helpful to us. Persephone Perry & her mommy & daddy appreciate you!
