How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my dog, to the Banfield pet Hospital in Westlake Ohio on May 26, 2022 for a dental prophylaxis at a cost of $462.22. In September her mouth blew up with an abscess I called Banfield to get her in and they couldn’t see her for 10 days and said maybe I should go to an emergency clinic. That’s not how you treat patients that have been there forever. Looking back at the dental cleaning that they did in May. They did not do any bloodwork before hand. I was able to find a veterinary hospital that specializes in dental work. They took Molly in did full mouth x-rays found that she had three abscess teeth and four teeth very very loose, so they all had to be removed. My husband is a dentist, so we are quite aware of teeth and problems. My poor dog had should not of had to suffer with abscesses and loose teeth, that should have been found when she had the prophylaxis in May. Needless to say, I am very displeased with Banfield, and would not recommend them to anyone. So glad we were able to find a veterinary practice that actually cares about the animals instead of the money.

The veterinarians and support staff are professional, super friendly, animal lovers and people friendly as well. When we enter the facility we are greeted with friendly smiles and excitment from them about our pets. Our 2 dogs love going there because the staff puts them at ease with treats and gentle, calm handling. We like the fact that we get to stay with our dogs during the visits and appreciate the tender loving care they get. Thank you Westlake group!

Took my doggie Zane there for the first time ever. I was scared at first because I just recently moved over here so I had to change his hospital to another banfield. The staff was amazing and very welcoming and attentive, they are THE banfield hospital and they weren’t located inside anything so it’s an actual animal hospital. Zane loved them and they loved him lol will be bringing him back for a teeth cleaning.

Please beware!!!! If the staff are rude you can only imagine the standards they hold to your voiceless animals in the back. Not speaking on the vets behalf. The staff whom I can't name, because they refused to give me her name, rolled her eyes at me and mocked me for the shocked look on my face when I was told that I couldn't go into the back with my puppy. I wasn't rude towards her just taken by surprise. Her response was unnecessary. I wouldn't want to leave my puppy in the hands of people who can't control their own attitudes. That to me says that they can't properly handle a scared animal that suffers from separation anxiety. Her response just screamed to me "please don't leave your pup in her hands" I understand that's Banfield protocols but the response she gave to me reassured me that this is not the right place. Again animals can not speak for themselves and I hope that corporate can reach out to these employees (the one that was extremely uncalled for and the second one that yelled at me to leave because I had asked for the other girls name) and help direct them in a positive way to learn to understand and to show real care and compassion. This was a terrible experience and sadly I wouldn't return to another Banfield nor recommend them.

I have been here a few times with two of my cats. One of them had to be put down and everyone was very caring and supportive. Each time I've been here the staff is always friendly and nice. I've been to three different Banfield locations (this one and two in Phoenix, AZ) and have been pleased with each one.
