How to Save Money at Kentown Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here is excellent. Everybody who helped me on the phone (Stacy, Kelly, Daisy forgive me if I forgot a name or got it wrong) are all helpful. Dr. Chris is a compassionate man and I can tell he is a good person just from the way he speaks and the look on his face. I want to write my thoughts on what happened the few times I was here. Last year my 15 year old cat developed a growth on his tongue. We weren't sure what it was but Dr. Chris told us it was cancer and explained everything to me. He told me that removing the growth would only delay the inevitable (paraphrasing ofc) and that there are long term treatments but they are very costly and stressful to animals. I understood what he meant right then and there. Though the growth could be removed it would come back in a short span of time and then the only thing that could be done was chemo, feeding tubes, removal of the jaw, etc. He was smart not to say what he was actually trying to say because he doesn't want to upset somebody. I'm an older person now and I got the hint right away and appreciate his candor. I can see other people not so happy about it because it is after all their pet's life. Anyway he once again asked me if we would like to at least remove the growth that would eventually come back. He drove the point home that it would probably come back in about a month or two. Instead of just taking our money and doing the surgery he actually informed us of everything to expect. This is when I knew Dr. Chris was the real deal. We did indeed proceed with removal of the growth because I felt the need to try what we could afford. In my mind I knew it was a long shot but a shot I needed to take regardless. I know it may come off as selfish but this actually turned out to be a pretty good decision. It gave our boy about another month of life and though that may not seem long he was happy and eating and doing his thing just only a few days after surgery. It gave us time to spend with him and spoil him and prepare ourselves for the inevitable. When it came time to do so Dr. Chris was the one to send him on his way and I couldn't ask for a better person to do so. Flash forward to yesterday 10-11-24. Our other cat ended up getting sick (I wont get into details) Dr. Chris was again there for the euthanasia process. He was very gentle, caring, and compassionate. Truly born for this role in life. I seen a quick look of hurt on his face for the deed that he would have to perform. I hate to see people sad but at the same time it made me happy. It made me happy to see that this situation hit him hard despite the fact he's done this routine plenty. It told me everything I needed to know. He cares and I hope and feel certain he will always feel that way. I feel that it will never get easier for him, but he is the one that must do it BECAUSE he cares. I couldn't thank him in person as I was too choked up and holding back tears so I just gave him a handshake and left the room with my daughter while my wife stayed behind to send our boy away. It was my only way of communicating and not only saying "Thank you." but also to say "I respect you." Dr. Chris, do not ever change your outlook on your profession. Continue to do what you do. You may have studied hard and worked hard to get where you are at but there are some outstanding traits that simply cannot be taught. Traits that people are just born with and you possess that. Compassion, empathy, and honesty are among them. I envy your friends and your family. They are lucky to have someone like you by their side. Thank you again from myself, my wife (Katie), our daughter (Elle) Growler, and of course Bob (Boboli). We named him after the pizza bread. It just sort of evolved that way and it's cute lol. Also thank you again to the staff. May you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Dr. Chris is an incredible doctor and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my pets. My dog was diagnosed with cushings in 2021 and has been going strong ever since! She is turning 14 this year. Dr. Chris is compassionate, knowledgeable & explains everything in terms I understand. The staff is amazing, as well! I can confidently leave my animals there knowing they will be loved the entire time.

This clinic is AMAZING! I have a big doggo that has anxiety and is a difficult patient since he doesn't like being touched and poked by veterinarians. The whole team was amazing and handled him so well! They allowed me to stay in the room with him as it makes him more comfortable. I highly recommend taking your beloved pet here for amazing care!!
