How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

UPDATE: We are still happy with Banfield after all these years. Over 6 years now and they are still amazing to deal with. We have been using Banfield for years and we are very happy with the service and glad to have them so close to the house. The Wellness plans we have on both pets has saved us over $1000 over the last 12 months. The veterinary services are top notch. Highly recommend the Milford location.

EDIT: it seems like Banfield has come under new management. I got a call from someone addressing my concerns almost two months later, she said she had just come into the position and was working through loose ends. She was very courteous and responsive, and by the end of the week had completely addressed all my concerns. I am amending my review to 3 stars to reflect this new experience, and if I ever need to go back there for any reason I will be sure to update as needed. I took my cat in for some issues she was having. Before I got a diagnosis I was being pushed to have a subscription that I was very wary of. Then the vet came out and handed me a sheet of paper that had been obviously printed off a website describing some rare condition that my cat supposedly had. Reading through it, the description itself said that other tests should be run to rule out more common causes. However the vet was confident and she was the expert. This condition would require regular checkups so I caved and bought the plan. The plan indicated that I would have free visits going forward. The next day my cat got worse (was not supposed to happen with this condition) and I tried to call to get an emergency appointment, only to get an automated message saying the vet was closed on Thursdays. I had to take her somewhere else, which turned out to be a blessing because they found the issue, a much more common one that is nonetheless dangerous if not handled quickly. The kicker is that I needed to get a couple of things to set her up and when I went in to Petsmart Banfield was apparently open. I requested a refund for the plan because I felt scammed and have not received it. I will never go back there again.

Dr. English is the best vet I've seen in a long time. She actually cares for your animal. When something happened with my cat that I've had for 17yrs and I started to cry she cried right along with me. She really listens to you talk about what's going on with your pet too that's why I love taking my cat to Banfield Pet Hospital

Banfield in Milford has an awesome vet and workers -- so compassionate , understanding and loving with our old dog. It's hard not to feel guilty when your pet is suffering, but they just do their best to help and support. They went above and beyond when our dog died; even shedding tears with us.

I suspected my dog had a UTI and wanted to get her in somewhere quickly. This was the only banfield location with any availability within two weeks. I soon found out why this location had openings—no one else wanted to come here. I had to wait for fifteen minutes at the desk until one of the pet smart employees was nice enough to knock on their door for me. We watched them sit there laughing while we waited, and the employee told me they have people complain about them frequently. I understand people have to take breaks, but there should always be someone covering the front desk. My dog did, in fact, have a UTI and they offered me two choices of antibiotics, but admitted that one of them would not kill the bacteria causing her UTI. It was the cheaper option, but why even offer medication you know won’t work?? Fast forward to two weeks later, I bring a new sample of urine in like they asked so they can test it to make sure the antibiotics worked. They acted like they had no idea what I was talking about and then finally said someone would call me within a few days to let me know the results. Guess what? It’s been two weeks and nothing. I will never go to this location again.
