How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would not recommend this clinic. I have taken my puppy twice for her rounds of vaccines and the vet, Jonah Firestone, does not care at all. He keeps referring to my dog as a he, when she is a she. He keeps telling us that we need to work on training and obedience, when she was potty trained, crate trained, and responds to commands quickly before we even went to him. He did not care to ask how she’s doing, nor care to notice she was cool, calm, and collected in both her visits. He kept telling us that she was nervous and anxious when she was sitting wagging her tail and letting him do whatever he needed to her, while remaining perfectly calm. Jonah does not care, it’s sad to see as our little girl is doing such a good job and is discredited by someone who doesn’t care to pay attention. His vet techs tried to upsell us on medications and vaccines and when asked what they do, they didn’t even know and had to look it up. The only good thing about this place is the receptionists. They are fantastic.

I scheduled my appointment a week in advance to have my dog checked if she’s pregnant and receive vaccinations. on the day of the appointment, I was told they were unable to get her into an exam room to check about pregnancy due to it already being booked. the doctor, could only look at her and give me a guess that she may be pregnant therefore not providing any vaccinations. No checkup was done and nothing that we came in for was serviced or completed. then was told I would be charged $75, when asked why the lady at the front desk told me because I saw the doctor and talked with her. I live 30 minutes away and this was a complete waste of time. The only good part is that I had the coupon that allows for a free head to toe check up.

Took in a stool sample at 10:30 on Saturday 12/30 and when I finally called after 5 pm was told couldn’t get a response from the team and we’re closed the next 2 days. Will find another vet who will answer my questions because I never got a call back from them. When I finally heard back on Tuesday with a passive aggressive reply about the lab being closed for holidays (which I should have been informed up front) to two prescriptions would be waiting and wouldn’t you know the office doesn’t have them and the receptionist is playing vet and telling me that I don’t need what the vet says I do so I left with no prescription but looking for a vet.

I am more than disappointed with care from the vet here. We came in for a check up and shots and paid for both. Though the shots were fine, they did not do a check up at all, they asked if there were any issues and that was it, did not check his ears, his tail, ask any questions and only spent about 5 minutes in the room including the time to receive shots. The nurse was kind and helpful, but that veterinary lady was rude and not thorough or caring with my pup. Had to go to a different vet to get an actual check up and pay twice so thanks a lot. Turns out our pup needs further treatment but the vet was to inconsiderate to care for my pup. Just because we are the last appointment of the day does not mean we don't deserve the same level of care as others. I would leave no stars if I could.

I love this clinic. They are so friendly and quick and caring. Dr Firestone is a wonderful vet and I have been totally happy with their services. This is the 3rd time I have taken my puppy to see him.
