How to Save Money at Rover The Rhine

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Prepare to read. I’ve been taking my cat here since I got her 2 years ago. I’ve since moved and this is now 30 minutes away. When I first came, I raved about this place. Dr. Kat is always professional, addresses concerns, and talks in a way that’s easily understood(+) I don’t really like how they keep you in a small room while your pet gets taken elsewhere, but I understand the reasoning behind it. As for the front desk team, when I started, I believe Deja was the name of the person I interacted with. She was warm, knew what she was doing, and even spoke to my cat directly upon arrival and departure.(+) I believe Alex is who I spoke with today. No greeting when I entered the door, just asked my pet’s name and started the sign in. As I was going to pay my invoice, I stood there for almost five minutes in uncomfortable silence as her computer experienced issues. (-) Technology fails, that’s no fault of hers, but at least tell people what’s going on so they don’t feel so in the dark. The invoice I was given also didn’t include the specific charges of the medicines I was given, just that it cost $55 more than the visit itself. (-)I used to recommend folks go here, I’m not sure if I would now. Thus, the four stars instead of five. I’ll continue returning for Dr. Kat.

Dr. Cat and her team have always been honest, upfront and fair with my wife and me. We have a dog Lexie who has had cancer for a while. There has not been a point that I have felt like they were putting their interest in front of ours. I am very difficult to please, So this says a lot about them.

I had a tooth extraction scheduled for my dog, I do not recall for certain, but I think it was done by Dr. Kat(?). Everything was fine until I went to pick my dog up, I heard him crying as I walked in the door. He cried, non-stop, for days. Even after I called and verified I could give him more pain meds. My dog wouldn't come near me for 5 days because he thought I took him to the vet to be punished. It took weeks for me to fully regain his trust. My entire family was shocked by his non-stop crying, the pained look in his eyes, and his unwillingness to come to me -- his absolute favorite human. Upon looking into things further, this location uses ketamine to anesthetize dogs, and this is what they blamed my dog's petrification on. To be honest, I have a veryyyyy difficult time believing the ketamine was to blame... Really does make me think more went on... Maybe they began before he was asleep... Maybe they had someone hold him down or hurt him... Maybe they skimped on anesthesia... Maybe there was none... My dog was absolutely horrified, and despite not being able to speak, I understood he was trying to convey to me through his cries and deadlock stare that not only was he in pain but he was mistreated. I was horrified that my dog was so traumatized, angry at the vets, and heartbroken he was put through this. It pains me to think that in his predicted and too-short 10-15 year life span here on earth, he had to deal with this. He was TRAUMATIZED. Over the next few years, he woke me many times with whimpers and cries from his nightmares. I would gently wake him and comfort him until he went back to bed each time. I hope no one else, especially any animal, has to deal with what my dog, primarily, and me, secondarily, did. PS: I'm sure if Rover the Rhine sees this, they'll give some official statement on the uncertainty of dog's reaction to anesthesia, how they can't be responsible, etc. Maybe an apology. Certainly no refund for abusing my dog. Regardless, a refund cannot undo my dog's trauma.

The very best veterinarians in downtown Cincinnati! They take such good care of Joe Purrow & Zoe! And their staff are amazing! Reasonable prices too. Love Rover!

I could not be more thankful and appreciative for the kind and caring services provided to my cat. She suffered a medical emergency that needed immediate surgery, and Rover the Rhine were able to accommodate us same-day. They were patient, understanding, and were incredibly reassuring and transparent with everything. The folks here are absolute lifesavers!
