How to Save Money at Grady Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Chihuahua was attacked by a large dog and this pet hospital saved my dog's life! I probably called five times a day for 5 days straight and they were never annoyed and they were always comforting and nice and willing to help. They even let me and my husband visit him for 2 days straight, over 2 hours one day! They truly care about your animals!

Highly recommend. Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and professional staff that truly care about the well-being of your pet and aiding in their recovery. The flexible visiting hours are a definite plus IMO, as I was able to visit after work from around 11 PM to 2/3 AM with no issues or complaints from any of the staff. This was much appreciated so I could spend time with my cat while he was in their care. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Huge THANK you to Dr Shea and the anesthetic team for taking care of my old guy who endured a 2hr dental surgery. This whole process was stressful considering my cat is nearly 18yrs old but Dr Shea walked me thru the process and things turned out exactly as she said it would. Her honesty and empathy was undeniable. Overall just a great staff and I would recommend this hospital to any one!!! Your furry friends are in great hands here!!! ❤️

There will always be negative people and different perceptions of experiences. You can’t always help a worker here and there having a bad day… doesn’t mean it’s a bad business. We all have those days. People shouldn’t have such high standards. But my experience was absolutely amazing and continues to be amazing. Although it’s costly… which they absolutely cannot help. Do yall know how much having a baby WITH insurance costs? I think I would much rather have a pet. Pets are wonderful and just as much worth spending money for. The front desk ladies were so so sweet. I felt so welcomed. My kitty was taken in quickly for an emergency. He’s in congestive heart failure and he’s been sick the past few days. The vet/doctor listened to my worries and really took it seriously. I wasn’t talked over. She made eye contact and really cared. She even went as far as to show me the xray and explain what she’s seeing. The doctor even explained the costs to me and I felt like a person. Sorry to the people that had bad experiences, but you can’t always help when they’re at high capacity. Doesn’t mean that they don’t care. They’re just trying to take care of everyone. Patience is also worth it for an animal. Never complain about the wait especially if your animal was not experiencing an emergency at the moment. My cat went back immediately due to preexisting conditions that make him potentially critical. Sometimes it can be extremely overwhelming and draining to see animals sick all day. They are just completely numb and it’s hard to stay chipper sometimes when they see such hard things. But I would recommend this place to anyone!

I am so grateful for Dr. Ward and the team at Grady. My very athletic weimaraner broke her accessory carpal bone playing fetch... an injury only typically seen in race horses and racing greyhounds. 😅 Another orthopedic surgeon who consulted with Dr. Ward on my girl's very rare case said he had never even seen this type of injury happen to a dog in his 53 years of practice. Neither had Dr. Ward. But thankfully, his extensive knowledge and expertise led him to trust his gut on this... and ultimately he recommended and guided us through only a stabilization cast treatment, no surgery required. After initially thinking my girl may never run or play frisbee again, she has made a miraculous recovery. I cannot thank Dr. Ward and his team at Grady enough for so thoughtfully and sincerely caring for my baby girl. ❤️
