How to Save Money at Oakwood Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog had been a patient for a couple years for routine checkups. Then he suddenly became very ill and wasn't doing well. I suspected it to be a tick-borne illness and took him in for an appointment with Dr Ellis. It was a horrible experience as she had no bed-side manners. Her inquiry and assessment of our dog was not thorough. She recommended we have tests done, which we did. She then emailed us the results and said "if you have any questions, call the office." Well, I did have questions and I did call the office but Dr Ellis would not get on the phone with me to answer any of my questions. Instead, they directed me to schedule another appointment (availability the following week) to talk to the vet more. I would have thought that my first appointment paid for my right to ask followup questions about my test results, but no, they think that requires another appointment and more money. At a time when I was scared because my dog was actively dying in front of my eyes, Dr Ellis did not provide the patient care that I would expect from a vet. She was robotic and insensitive. I became a $ instead of a patient. Besides this specific incident, I was never really thrilled with my experience there. Took them several tries to accurately write a prescription for heart-worm because they kept putting the wrong weight down. And they refused to allow the pharmacy to transfer the prescription to a generic brand (which would have been a lower cost). I've left the practice.

Can't say enough great things about this office. They took my pup in as a new patient for an emergency visit within 25 minutes of me calling. We received quick and prompt care including much needed help getting him out of the truck and inside the office. Staff was beyond friendly and welcoming and the prices were way less than I anticipated. Highly recommend this vet office and will be returning as a regular patient.

Great staff, clean, quick I originally posted my review about a week ago , and Since then a lot has happened, unfortunately we had to put our cat down but I can say the staff were so nice with us and they gave us all the time we needed before we were ready to put him down, they gave us a private room and let us stay through the whole experience. It hurt losing a part of our family, and we were so fortunate at this clinic were so sympathetic. In the past, I brought another cat of ours to be put down (she had cancer) and the other veterinary clinic were horrible with us, so we are extremely grateful for a Oakwood Veterinary Clinic! They waived some fees for us too, which made the financial burden a lot easier as well. I want to personally think all the staff at Oakwood for being so kind with us.

Always a pleasure going there. The staff is great. I also enjoy watching the tortoises in the waiting area. I’ve been using them as my dogs veterinarians for years and do t think I will be changing any time soon.
