How to Save Money at Jericho Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been bringing all our fur babies ... pooches ... to Jericho Animal Hospital for 30+ years and our dogs have received outstanding care here.

Took my dog there for a new patient exam and to address some itching problems. Was happy with the staff and the vet. When I took my dog for doggie day camp a few weeks later, I found out that she needed another bordatella vaccine. The vet hadn’t mentioned this and when I called the office they said vaccines were required in Suffolk every 6 months. I wish this had been brought to my attention at the initial visit, but since it wasn’t, I was ready to make an appointment until I was told I would have to pay for another exam in addition to the vaccine even though the dog had been seen at the office less than a month before!!! I did not make the appointment and I will take her elsewhere.

Not only did the doctor ensure my dogs microchip was there and working he took his time with my pup who normally is very snappy. He answered all our questions and made sure to hit every point and more. My dog usually hates anyone new but my pup was surprisingly calm and comfortable with the doctor. The office is clean easy to get to, plenty of parking and staff are really nice. Prices were par to local vets.

My cats had been going to this vet for a couple of years for routine check ups and they were always nice and easy to book with, etc. Their practice is for older cats to come 2x a year so they can proactively identify any issues. I brought up a concern to our vet, Dr. Ulrich, on the last two visits regarding one of my cats and she minimized my concern. I was going to wait for the next 6 month checkup but then decided against it because I knew something was wrong. I went to get a second opinion at another practice and now my poor cat has to get a biopsy and CT scan for cancer, the prognosis of which could be as low as 25% chance of living for 1 year. Wish they had paid attention to my concerns a bit more when I raised them, but did not even bother to do lab work. Very disappointed and wish I had sought out a second opinion sooner, but now it may potentially be too late for my cat. I know the staff here really care for animals and the environment is nice, but they completely dropped the ball on this one and now we will not be going back. :(

Super nice staff. Willing to listen and answer repeated questions from any nervous nervous pet owner. They seem to even have a behaviorist on staff - or at least pay attention to behavior - as I overhead an over 10min consultation about a puppy have trouble when his parents left the house (a common and easily solvable problem, FYI). They seemed to offer lots of tips, resources, and phone numbers to local resources (trainers, etc) It was also fantastic to see an all-women team from the doctors on down. And like most vets - very chill, make you feel at home, and of course, pet owners themselves - so there's a lot of empathy and appreciation of really serious and mindful of your pets health. Some ways they went/go above and beyond: ---------------------------------------------------- 1. Dr. Orobello texted me personally at 8:30am SUNDAY morning - the very next morning after our SATURDAY visit.... to tell my that my dog's fecal and HW tests were negative! Awesome! 2. They offer their own pet insurance /care plan. It's not cheap, but the most inclusive one I've ever heard of. Stand it's their own plan... Which I assume means it's run by the VCA parent company / chain 2. They're very serious about their COVID hygiene, so call the main number from the parking lot
