How to Save Money at Erie Canal Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Rude staff! They don’t care about your pets, only the money they can make from them! My dog was in bad shape and needed to be seen, I was happy when they said they had an urgent care and could see my dog. After bringing her in they did an ultrasound and told me she had pyometra, a very serious infection in her uterus. The cure was surgery to remove her uterus. But they told me they couldn’t do the surgery then and there, because they were an urgent care, and it wasn’t urgent… So I called other vets around and they all told me, sorry we don’t have any surgeons available today to to this, and you really need to get this done today because it is an emergency! So when I finally found a place that could, they told us to bring her in ASAP. This new vet called Erie Canal to inform them I was coming to pick up my dog to bring her over and that they were going to do the surgery. So I pick up my dog and payed Erie Canal 1,200$, for an ultrasound?!? Upon looking over the bill I noticed they gave me an anti bacterial medicine “to take home” that cost 280$ This was completely unnecessary as we were taking her to another vet to get the surgery she needed. I didn’t notice at the time because I was in a hurry to get my dog to the other vets office to do this URGENT surgery. Anyway, after my dogs life was saved by the other capable vet, we called Erie to ask for a refund on the completely useless 280$ medicine. Calmly we said, we were given these med for this, we didn’t need them could we please return these. Immediately the manager said, “ nope! We absolutely will not be able to refund you” Then we went into detail telling whole story and why it was obvious that we would not even need these meds and that they KNEW we wouldn’t be using them because they had spoken to the other vet before I picked her up. “We can’t refund you because the medicine left the building” We stood our ground and said we will be bringing these meds back and getting our refund! Then tells us we are banned from ever coming back and using them because we stood up for ourselves and demanded a refund. Like we would ever even want to go back anyways. Terrible staff, rude, uncaring, and money hungry.

I haven't actually been here, but called them on Saturday since my dog had a urinary infection & my regular vet was closed. They were fully booked, but offered to test her urine and sounded like they could get me meds if needed. I wasn't able to collect a big enough urine sample to be usable, but I really appreciated how helpful and accommodating they were, to someone needing help when they were closing soon. Would definitely visit them and recommend them!

Dr Wendel and her team are so wonderful! We would never trust any other vet with our pup. Thorough explanations and make sure our boy is doing well.

The only reason I am hesitant to give a 5 star rating is simply because they already have such a large client base that I don't really want anymore people to go there! Spencerport Country Veterinarian killed our puppy by prescribing a copious amount of drugs for a routine spay, so I'm very hesitant to go to the vet. These women changed all that. They are so patient and thorough during exams, don't try to push unessesary meds or procedures and show a genuine care for your pet. Can't say enough positive things about both locations.. Especially Dr Wendel. She has restored my faith in taking my three puppies to the vet.

Compassionate and understanding of the pet and owner's needs. Made a very difficult decision easier. Losing our "Peanut" was very difficult for the staff as well. You left feeling as if they were truly sorry for our eventual loss.
