How to Save Money at Grady Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I don’t know where the compassion was at the front desk last Saturday morning at this facility but it was astonishing to see both women completely devoid of it. Our beloved Papa, a long term patient of Grady, had sustained a medical episode early that morning which we later learned at the emergency clinic in Bohemia was congenital heart failure. They proceeded to quote outrageous fees which didn’t promise any guaranteed positive outcomes so we elected to have Papa receive oxygen and a shot of fluid reducing medication for us to bring him home so we could have him seen at Grady. When he was brought out he seemed to be struggling worse than he was brought in; panting and in need of oxygen. At home he was clearly unable to get in a comfortable position, seemed to be struggling to get enough oxygen and had tears in his eyes (the latter of which will haunt me forever). We were at Grady the moment they opened and phoned from the parking lot to explain our situation. Whoever answered the phone was basically robotic and seemed all too eager to conclude the call as soon as possible. This despite the fact that we held the phone to the dog’s mouth. All she spewed was rhetoric about pets being seen by appointment. No emotion on her voice. We proceeded to walk into the facility to make our point known by showing how distressed Papa was. Both attendants don’t flinch and one said he needed to be taken to an emergency clinic. We attempted to explain what had occurred when we had brought him to Bohemia. They explained a Dr wouldn’t be at the facility until an hour and they didn’t have oxygen on the premises. What happened to outside the box thinking? Couldn’t a Dr have been called to explain the situation for a possible alternative treatment? Was there really no oxygen on the premises? We’ve been taking multiple animals to Grady’s for many years now if you check the charts going back to our previous dog, Luigi. I am very very disappointed in the front desk’s lack of empathy. Even if treatment could not have been provided what about a humane approach given the optics of the dog’s suffering? I know Anthony would have been very compassionate had he been behind the counter. Needless to say, Papa was brought back to Bohemia where, due to financial limitations, we had to make the unbearable decision to put him down. I think a phone call is warranted to Sandra, my partner, to at least apologize for the demeanor of the staff we encountered last Sat morning. You certainly can and should do better with staff given the field they chose to work in.

The negative reviews are unfortunate, but my experience with them was anything but negative. My cat needed emergency surgery and was quoted 13000 (!) from an ER vet. They were able to bring it down to 9500, but still wasn't affordable. A very nice lady there recommended Grady Animal Hospital saying they would be able to do it for much less. I called and relayed exactly what the previous vet had told me and rushed the kitty over. About an hour later I got a call that the surgery was done and she was resting, and everything went well. I was able to visit her during their visiting hours the next day and everyone was very nice. Picked her up the day after and everything was great. There was a little wait, but they also were dealing with giving a dog an emergency C-section to save a couple puppies. I'd recommend them to everyone with fur babies. Thank you for saving Violet :)
