How to Save Money at North Country Veterinary Referral Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Words can't describe how grateful I am to them. I bought a cat ( not mine) after someone hit it with a car across my house. And they did their best, and the front desk lady was sweet and calmed me down. Sadly cat died. But they called me asap, which I appreciated that

We brought our Female dog in for shot updates the staff seemed friendly till our dog left with a female staff member into the back to receive them not in front of us for whatever reason never experienced that before with any animal we have had before at a vet! As the door shut we hear a few staff ooh and ahh then a male say be careful with that breed of dog? Our dog may be a Rottweiler but she’s the sweetest girl and has never shown any aggression what so ever! At check out we scheduled her booster shots for a few weeks later we showed up for that appointment 10minutes early and there was one front counter staff member that was very rude to the guy in front of us he complained to us and two others in line on the way out we were not helped by her but the other staff member she went into the back then the rude one came back out asked us if we need help I said no thank you we have been helped she replied can I do anything for you? I said we are set just waiting and she rolled her eyes and huffed. We waiting 30mins and people that came in after us went in rooms we calmly said what’s going on we have been here a while they got brought in first. Booster shots should take 20mins tops she then snapped back saying we were not even on the schedule and we’re being fitted in I don’t know what you want from us! Mind you this appointment was scheduled before we left almost a month ago! A few weeks later we got a male puppy unfortunately he has two seizures at 11weeks and passed away. In the last 24hrs we paid this vet almost $600 to do necropsy I drop our poor puppy off around 9am they called around 3 saying it was complete and nothing was out of the ordinary no internal bleeding, no trauma, no organ damage, nothing but food in stomach, if we would like labs sent in it would be at least another $400 or more depending what they sent in but usually reveals nothing she then mentioned cremation I asked how much that was the staff member said $60 in a group or $150 alone I spoke with my wife we decided on alone the staff member said would you like a paw print I said yes please she then put me on hold then came back and said okay $205 I said wait you said $150 alone sales tax is only 7% she goes oh the print is $40! WHAT! You offer me a paw print of my dog with no mentioned of fee then charge me for it? $40 For ink on a paw pressed on a sheet of paper! Thanks! They wouldn’t let us pay when we picked our boy back up after cremation payment was demanded by card over phone before he would be sent for cremation like there was a rush I said when can I pick him up she said two weeks not this Tuesday next Tuesday they already came and left for the week. She said the doctor will call you tonight. Tonight came and went no call with zero answers to what would have caused his sudden death we have called twice today trying to make contact one of the front counter girls just said he was bitten by a Poisonous snake probably idk I’m no expert but it was probably something poisonous the doctor will call you today. Unfortunately compassion for others isn’t guaranteed and tact doesn’t come natural it’s taught! Stopping in Hoping for answers 8/3/22 at 3:20pm the two younger staff members were compassionate and helpful unfortunately the doctor who performed the necropsy is not in and no report is printable, try to be patient. Rest easy Cruz we love you, always will your a good boy! Hopefully we have you back soon.

We took our dog Savannah in for an emergent treatment from a bad reaction she was having from fleas. They prescribed her an antibiotic and now she is nearly back to normal running around playing with the other dogs.

The people and Dr. are great. Its the way they don't have emergency services. While I was there a guy came in with a hurt dog and they wouldn't do anything. Even though they were not busy. The closest emergency vet is an hour away. We have had this problem before and we are patients here.
