How to Save Money at Small Door Veterinary - Gramercy

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I like this vet! They were easy to book, the vets and techs are good, and the people who work at the front desk are very accommodating and friendly. We got the annual membership for our dog, which is about $89 a month. We ended up moving out of the city and you're not able to cancel the annual plan for any reason, so we have to continue paying the monthly fee even though we can only use the telehealth service (we have never used it). The vet made one really big mistake on an ID form that caused a major setback on international travel timing. We had to move abroad and our dog was delayed about a month because of their mistake. They paid the fee to fix the form ($38), but it definitely wasn't worth it.

Absolutely wonderful experience at Small Door. Walked in, front desk checked me in and offered me a sparkling beverage in a beautiful waiting room. No wait, went into the exam room with my cat, greeted by the vet and two nurses / assistants. Dr Tsang immediately got on my cat’s level, asked me about his lifestyle, history, etc to get to know him. My cat had a grand time exploring the exam room. The vet and the nurses were great with my kitty, who can be shy around new people. They were very loving and gentle when administering vaccines and a blood draw, and rewarded him with lots of yummy Churu paste, pets, and reassuring words. They sent me home with clear instructions, supplies from the wellness bundle (a great deal!), and a cute tote bag. Definitely the best vet experience I’ve ever had.

Our baby, Bella, is a complicated Bulldog with all the bulldog stuff. Yesterday, she had an issue and we decided to try this office. The staff was amazingly friendly and welcoming. Dr. Davies was compassionate, professional, and thoughtful. She addressed all of our concerns. Bella was in such good hands. We are grateful for the care that our baby received.

This place is amazing. They took great care of Fibi and we both enjoyed the visit, I actually didn’t want the appointment to end. We recently moved to the US, and they gave me great guidance on how to best take care of Fibi here. They also followed up on her progress since we originally went because she wasn’t feeling well.

Beware of the membership plans. They don't cover anything and you end up paying much, much more than the original estimate. We are way over $1,500 additional payments this year and they want to charge us an additional $2,000 for a spay. If your dog gets sick, expect to pay $350 out of pocket even if you have the plan. The vet will smile and tell you that they will let you know before the auto renewal, but the company does not let you know and they make it extremely difficult to cancel. You should basically expect to get charged twice, even though you don't need it for the second year when your dog is no longer a puppy. The visits are mediocre. You basically get 10 minutes with a new vet each time. There is no reason to pay a huge premium for Small Door. They have nice office and good marketing. That's basically it. We had a terrible experience with Small Door.
