How to Save Money at Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell's Kitchen

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

One of the best, and my personal go-to Vet in Hells Kitchen, though I'd travel here regardless of my residence in the neighborhood due to how professional, caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable they are. While they may be slightly more expensive than other lower cost Vets in the boroughs, they are still my #1 choice as they explain in detail every charge and what their purpose is/was. I've had two dogs (Pug puppy and a senior Yorkie) examined here multiple times and they've always taken great care. Afterwards the doctors are very friendly and courteous and break down everything perfectly from the exams. I couldn't recommend them enough. The Drs, technicians, assistants, and the entire staff in general are incredible. You won't regret bringing your fur baby in.

I couldn’t be more upset and feel completely scammed by this clinic after we’ve been going here for four years. When we saw Dr. Liff I thought Roscoe was being taken care of, but recently no one else here has been helpful. It’s so disappointing. I brought my dog in for a limp a couple of weeks ago. He was briefly examined and I was told to get a lyme disease test but the vet couldn’t even figure out what/how he was limping- which leg etc but we guessed the left because he got more annoyed with us touching that area. Overnight he got progressively worse. No one from the vet called me to follow up the next day so I called and asked if I should bring him in again and was basically told no, wait, and I felt like I was nuts. I’m now in another city where it doesn’t cost $500/session for tests you don’t need, and the vet here told me not only is it obvious that my dog has arthritis in his back right leg because she can easily FEEL the cartilage slipping on and off his elbow- he absolutely doesn’t need to be sedated for X-Rays as I was told at Pure Paws, and he needs to get X-Ray’s done immediately. I’ve never owned a dog and I would do anything for this pup. I’ve been such an easy target of what appears to be corporate Vets in NYC driving up the tab and not giving my animal proper care. This new Vet said that he’s absolutely had the arthritis in his back legs for years, probably born with it, and that it should have been easily identified in his yearly physicals. Thank God this person took me seriously and now I can get my poor pup on a treatment plan. And this visit AND the X-Rays were half of what I pay at a normal visit at Pure Paws with no solution. I’m furious and strongly suggest you find another vet.

Dr. Liff is fantastic! She's very accommodating, extremely knowledgeable and has a very professional staff. Pure Paws was able to get us in for a surgical consultation immediately, and they were able to schedule the surgery for the following week. We drove almost six hours round trip from Upstate NY to have our dog receive care at Pure Paws and would do it all over again. Highly recommend.

This clinic (and their branch in Brooklyn) are thoroughly professional, extremely knowledgeable, trustworthy and very compassionate both with animals and their owners. After having too many bad experiences with vets in this city, I am so grateful to have found them. From the front desk staff to the vets and their assistants, everyone here is focused on top quality care. Keep up the great work and thank you again for looking after Frankie and I during our recent scare!

We made a last-minute appointment for our cat Shae for a checkup, shots, and to administer some medicine to keep her calm after our building was unexpectedly evacuated for most of the day. The staff at Pure Paws was extremely helpful, letting us use the exam room before/after her appointment to clean her up after she had an accident in her carrier and to give her some time/space to destress. Derrell in particular was really helpful in getting us set up with some cleaning supplies, water, etc for Shae. We feel really fortunate to have Pure Paws in our neighborhood. During past visits their quality of care has always been excellent and they go above and beyond to ensure the wellbeing of your furry friends.
