How to Save Money at Center For Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Paul Schwartz is the best Veterinarian I know. He saved my 3 year old Yorkies life when another vet wanted to put her down. Paul gave me another 10 yrs with my dog. Another poster claimed that this group lacked compassion for older animals, nothing could be further from the truth!! Dr Paul and Dr Kim have taken care of three of my dogs for the last thirteen years. The admin staff and the vet techs are all very much on point always. The best possible care for your animals are in their hands. If your animal is at the end of life they will handle that for you with the utmost compassion, they will also be straight forward and never let any animal suffer needlessly. These guys are the best in the business....... Love all of you Rob, Tille, Abigail & Freddie Mercury

CVC is a fully equipped veterinary hospital, with first rate vets. Still owned by Dr. Schwartz, not private equity (unlike many area practices), they will do after hours emergency calls if you are a client. I've trusted three dogs with life threatening illnesses to them, and they've gotten top of the line care. I really think they are some of the vets in the nation, notcjust Dutchess County. They are also not the most expensive out there (heartworm treatment $1,000-$1500, vs some other vets charging $3000). I also appreciate the clear and thorough way Dr. Schwartz explains things. Highly, highly recommend.

The vets and assistants were very good until my pet lived long enough to be in her older years. Gradually I noticed a change of attitude in both the veterinarians and the front office employees. By the time my pet lived to be 14 years old, I would come for a routine appointment, be ignored by the front office receptionist for 15 minutes or more while she yakked on the phone with a friend and then get so-so attention from the vet. It was inexcusable. I have two more pets now and and happy to spend my money elsewhere. Not recommended for people with older pets.

I was able to schedule an appointment the day after i got my new puppy with Dr Schwartz. From the moment I called the office the staff was incredible, one girl was nicer than the next and VERY professional and personable. My husband and I immediately felt comfortable with Dr. Schwartz and his sense of humor left us smiling all the way home. Well, one week later on a late Sunday night when the office was already closed, my puppy was experiencing a problem with her stool. I was very concerned.(don't want to be too graphic) I called the office and they said the Dr. on call would call me back. WITHIN 4 minutes i was on the phone with the doctor who said she will be ok, but bring her in first thing in the morning and even though he was all booked for the day he said not to worry i will see her. The next day his office called me BEFORE they were even open to assure me the doctor was waiting to see my puppy. You really can't ask for better care than that! My puppy is fine, they treated her with some medicine for 5 days and she was better after 2! This is the care you want for your most special 4 legged friends!
