How to Save Money at Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my dog, Mavis here a couple of weeks ago. I’m not going to leave a bad review because I waited and had issues with pricing. I am glad that they are here, I do feel that there was a lot going on that night my dog was “stable” so I waited. I do wish I knew the pricing before hand, maybe if I called ahead and asked. I was given an estimate for diagnostic testing when he was seen and didn’t end up doing it there. I did however drive a couple hours away to another animal hospital to get the testing done, due to my own financial situation. Luckily my dog had nothing that required surgery or hospitalization and they just continued what this hospital did and gave him an appetite stimulant. He is now back to himself. I witnessed so much there and it’s not a job I would want, thank you for what you do! I really do wish they were a little more upfront with pricing, or just kind of give you a general idea, but it’s emergency vet medicine!

Our family lost a part of our heart today, our beloved dog Odin. Dr. Gavin and team - my apologies for not remembering names - cared for and gently eased my boy into eternal rest. The genuine compassion and kindness extended to us in his final moments will always be remembered. You were gentle in your care for both of us. Thank you. Please enjoy a pic of him in his prime.

Despite being very busy Dr. Rogers and her team were thorough and professional. She took the time to discuss my options (it was a minor procedure) and I felt like she really did care and want to help my dog. Don’t go in there expecting a quick turnaround. There are animals there that have very serious issues and in order to provide the same level of care for each animal things take time. I did not feel rushed as I suppose you would not want to feel rushed as well, particularly if your pet has something complicated wrong with it. Thanks Dr. Rogers!

I took my baby here for an emergency visit, they were very busy but made him a priority & I am so grateful for them! They treated him & I so well, if need be I wouldn't hesitate to return. Their team, the sweet ladies at the front desk and their veterinarian Dr. Gavin were so kind and made me feel confident that my dog was in great hands. They also provide payment plans which was so helpful in a time of an unseen emergency. I highly recommend!!

An excellent place to bring your pet when they need emergency care. My cat Miracle was being treated & scheduled for testing when she took a bad turn on a Saturday when our local vet was closed. The entire staff was kind and professional from the minute we walked in the door. They took extra care to make sure the diagnosis was correct and helped us make the difficult decision to let Miracle go. It’s never easy to euthanize a beloved pet but it went about the best it could and they gave us much emotional support. I was surprised at how reasonable the costs were. We did have to wait a while as it was a busy Saturday but in our case it gave us time to talk & reconcile ourselves to what might happen. I think it’s a good sign too that sooo many people come here for pet care, and I saw many satisfied customers leave with treated pets. I highly recommend CDVRH.
