How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Clinic of The Hudson Valley

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had a great experience receiving affordable care here in a stressful situation. Our dog had a late night medical emergency and we called the clinic up to be sure that if we drove the 45min that our dog could be seen. The receptionist in the phone was very nice and encouraged us to come down. We got there and again she was very nice- checked us in and warned us it might be a wait. They see patients in order of severity. We were in the exam room within the hour. The vet tech and Dr. Black were both warm and compassionate towards to us and our dog. They diagnosed the issue quickly without the huge cost of multiple tests and within another hour had given our dog the antibiotics and other meds he needed and sent us home with the rest of the medication. Highly recommend this clinic! Thank you!!

From the staff at the front desk, the vet techs, and Dr. Black, this place is amazing and the best vet I've been to. My dog Milo had trouble breathing and even though they were at capacity, they took him right away and rushed him back. They were transparent with everything and as soon as they knew he was okay they let me know, and didn't make me wait anxiously. They were kind, efficient, and everything a vet's office should be. Thank you for helping my dog, I am so thankful.

We had called asking if they would see our dog Joules who had collapsed and we either suffering a heart attack or stroke and wasn’t getting enough air. They were 15 min away and we asked if we could please bring him in. They turned us away saying they were “at capacity” and gave us no help or advice. We called again begging for help and they said the doctors will be too busy until they closed…which wasn’t for HOURS. We were forced to try to go to the only other open emergency clinic 1 HOUR AWAY. Our poor boy passed away in the car on the way, extremely traumatic…my boyfriend tried giving him CPR and it was the most excruciating experience of a pet passing we have ever experienced in our lives. Do not try to go here unless you want a broken heart 💔

Called here this past Saturday as our 13 year old sheltie was having a hard time breathing. A little bit of backstory is about 8 weeks ago he was diagnosed with lymphoma. While we knew no vet would treat to cure but to treat to keep him comfortable. He declined very quickly. Was coughing overnight Friday into Saturday and by 9 am he was looking up and you could tell was having an extremely difficult time breathing. We called here and basically was cut off almost immediately so they could tell us the fees. Listen, I would have paid whatever they asked. I didn't care. I tried to continue on with describing a bit of history and got cut off again asking how long would it take me to get there and to make sure I understand at minimum it was going to be x amount of dollars. We drive from Poughkeepsie to Kingston. We arrive. Bring our boy in. The receptionist was again very rude but whatever. They send a tech out who listened to his heart and lungs and said well, he's stable. They tell us it would be 6 to 8 hours to see a vet. After the rudeness and them deeming a dog gasping for breath stable we left. At this point he's coughing up blood. We called around and found a place in New Paltz. His oxygen was so low. They said that his gums were completely white which since nothing dramatically changed in the hour difference that this should have been deemed critical by any vet or vet tech. I would never recommend this place at all after their office staff does not have the personality to be in the emergency end of the industry. Compassion is needed in emergent times not the rude and money grabbing attitude that this place exhibited.

Wonderful, caring team of professionals. We’ve had to bring our pets here due to emergencies a number of times and they have always been kind, understanding and honest about treatment options. Their compassion when we had to put our beloved cat down was sincerely appreciated during such a heart wrenching time. Amazing place!
