How to Save Money at Greenfield Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I found Greenfield when my parrot dismantled a toy and pierced his cheek with a piece of it. It was an urgent situation on a weekend and we could find no one with a bird expert - until we called Greenfield, where several exotic specialists are employed. They saved my bird. I use them now for my cats, dog, and Guinea pig, and have always had superb experiences. I highly recommend this practice!

Let me start by saying we are new to the Queensbury area and had not yet found a vet who would take on new patients when all this went down. My husband I brought our cat here on a Sunday thinking we were going to have to let him go. Long story, but he had been quite ill and spent 2 nights and 3 days at Upstate Veterinary Hospital in Latham. They took good care of him there, he had a very high fever, fluid in his chest. We were able to bring him home Saturday with meds and told to kept track of his temperature. That night was not good at all and his fever spiked again (which we were told was not a good sign) and he just looked like he was done. Mind you he is also not eating or drinking during this time. The person who answered the phone was so kind and even though they were booked got us in that afternoon. After thinking we would be leaving without our cat, we left with him and now the following Friday he is doing great. Dr. Akawi took the time to examine Dusty, look over his records from Latham, and sent us home with some additional protocols. I can never thank them enough for not just putting him ”down” and collecting our money. Even they were overbooked already they were kind and compassionate and let us know that that day was not the day for Dusty. Thank you thank you!

I have rats and have been to a couple places and no one treated them with compassion like Greenfield. They actually treated them like real animals and not "things". I am very thankful i found this place so close to where i live. The building could use some TLC if i had to say a con.

We were camping and from out of state, when we noticed a spot on our dogs leg that was bothering him. We were afraid that it would get infected by the time we got home, so I called Greenfield Animal Hospital and setup an appointment that afternoon. Dr. Hunnicutt and his assistant were wonderful with Scout. Very thorough checking him out and going over details with me on what they were going to do plus going over the medications and the bill. The next day, we got a follow up call to check on how Scout was doing. I recommend Greenfield Animal Hospital.

I brought our family dog here after he had gotten loose and had multiple ticks embedded in his skin. They diagnosed him with Lyme and treated him antibiotics. I rehomed him to my parents house and he seemed to be having flare ups, and when they brought him in they said he had never been treated by them for Lyme and refused to treat him. Even with proof of treatment (antibiotic prescription and pain pills) they still refused to test and treat. By the time we were able to get him into a different place it was too late and we had to put him down. I will never bring another animal to Greenfield. Not sure how a whole medical record can just disappear and then refuse to accept prescription bottles with your doctor's name and facility name. Do better!
