How to Save Money at Gardiner Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

hi neighbors, I just received a biopsy result that confirmed that my little best friend has cancer (skin cancer, from being in the sun). Im writing this for two reasons: 1. I’ve previously endorsed Gardiner Animal Hospital, whose doctors have dismissed my concerns of my cats lesions (ear scab) for years until casually mentioning during our last visit it “may” be cancer. A type of cancer they’re familiar with and have treated before and is most common in white cats. After doing my own research i realized it is absolutely what my cat has and i’m wondering why it took 2 years to mention the possibility to me, especially if they have the knowledge experience of this rare cancer. The doctors were kind to my face, but have refused to call me back. I believe they know their mistake and are embarrassed. no accountability is an awful trait for a doctor. Not only do i not endorse them, i would absolutely avoid them. 2. I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know there are such things as animal specialists like cat dermatologist, and internal medicine vets whose practice is more advanced than the general practitioners (most vets). If you suspect there’s something wrong with your best friend , go to a specialist. You know your pet better than anyone else, and sadly that includes doctors. I knew the scab that never healed was strange but i NEVER thought it could be cancer. Since it’s been years it has spread across his little perfect face. We’ve had to cut part of his ear off, and now with the positive biopsy we’re going to see a pet oncologist. All of this could have been avoided if a doctor recognized it the first time I brought him in and removed that little area. I’m sad, angry and frustrated. 😭❤️

A huge thank you to the entire staff. You've always been great to my dogs but today, my baby had a stick wedged and stuck in her mouth. You brought us right in, and two seconds later, the stick was out!!!! Pepper and I are very grateful!

Love everything about Gardiner Animal Hospital. Have been going there over ten years. Dr Ally is the best with my epi-cat Shirley.

Bought my pup in for a lump on her abdomen that appeared suddenly and she was in obvious pain. No blood work, no x rays and no ultrasound were completed. She was sent home with antibiotics for a skin condition and steroids. Brought her back 3 days later as it got worse. Did a biopsy and was told results would be available within 4 days. They never called - we ended up following up ourselves after two emergency visits with other vets (no appointments available in Gardiner) only to find out she has cancer. Date of results available on the paperwork when picked up was 6/15. Called to follow up for results on 6/19. This has been our vet for 30 years and I'll never bring another pet here.
