How to Save Money at The Pet Doctor of Flushing

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my kitten in she needed an exploratory surgery. I told the doctor we just got her insurance and asked if there was anything he could do to work with us for the cost. We were not able to apply for the credit card, we could have done a payment plan. He gave me information for a low cost center in manhattan. It said on the paper the facility was not for emergencies so no help to me. I thankfully found a vet who was half the cost and did the surgery same day. He told me my kitten was basically dying. I’m sure the other vet knew she was dying however, because I wasn’t able to afford his care, he expressed no concern. He did highly recommend I got her somewhere else but he couldn’t help me. Vets are supposed to care about animals. Allowing a 10 month old kitten to walk out knowing they will be dying and not trying to work up some sort of payment plan is appalling. I rated a 3 because the facility was nice and if I had insurance to help cover $4000 I’d have had a better experience. There was an older doctor I believe would have been better however, I’m not sure he didn’t help us. Unfortunately I got Dr. Koo a young vet seemingly in it for the money. If you want good, affordable care please go to Queens Low Cost Veterinary Center in Astoria. I paid $2,200 for surgery, one night hospital stay, medications. Dr. Ali saved my kittens life and I will forever be grateful. Also, the staff are all wonderful.

I was leaving for a vacation soon and my cat was not eating. My regular veterinarian office could not, would not fit her in for a visit. This was the second time I needed an emergency visit and they would not budge. Called The Pet Doctor, got a same day appointment. Staff was professional, personable and caring. My cat is fine and The Pet Doctor is now my choice of veterinarian care. Thank you!

I had an excellent experience with The Pet Doctor. Everyone was kind and compassionate. The doctor took the time to not only answer my questions but speak to my wife over FaceTime and answer her questions too. The doctor was fair and reasonable with her care recommendations. I feel like The Pet Doctor has my pet's best interest in mind and I would have no hesitation recommending them to another pet owner. I am confident that my dog will receive the best veterinary care at The Pet Doctor!

I had a wonderful experience at the Pet Doctor. I appreciated the ability to make an appointment online, and the reminders to show up. I had a wonderful time with the vet, and trusted his expertise. The only thing I would critique would be that I submitted information about my cat ahead of time, but still had to fill out the same paperwork (or very similar) in person. That's it. Great experience and I will be back with my other 3 pets.

I came to Pet Doctor to cremate my beloved cat, Foxy. Everyone was so friendly and professional. They went beyond my expectation. Not only did I receive Foxy’s ashes, they did her paw print, left some of her fur in a small cute glass jar, a loving poem, kept some flower pedals that we left for her. I’m extremely happy to know Pet Doctor will take care of your pet no matter what the circumstances.
