How to Save Money at Atlantic Coast New York Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So I just had a terrible experience at Atlantic Coast Veterinary in Farmingdale. Me and my wife brought of dog Axl in for a possible ear infection and ear cleaning . Axl gets bad Anxiety and he’s protective of my wife. He was pretty calm when the nurse came in but when the “Dr” came in was growling. I had already mentioned to put a muzzle on him. Dr gave me the muzzle to put on and I did. After 2 minutes of checking him out said that they couldn’t really check him and that he feared for his staff even with the muzzle on. My dogs 21lbs mind you. Gave us medication to sedate him at home and bring him back tomorrow which is completely ridiculous! After doing absolutely nothing for our dog they charged us $244 dollars between the visit and the sedation meds! Guys not a Dr. He’s a thief!! Dr Jason Gregory I think you should find a new career! Veterinarian is probably not it!

I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful for Patrick and the Veterinarian working tonight. They were the only ones willing to help me and my hurt feathered friend at 12am on a Sunday. It’s too bad I couldn’t say the same for other 24/7 Emergency Vets in the area who are supposed to care for animals. It’s good to know that there are some people who actually truly care about all living things and are willing to lend a hand in a time of need. Thank you so much for your help! You will never know how truly grateful I am.

I brought my dog Freya here because of a really bad ear infection. She had scratched it while I was at work to the point of her bleeding. I had gotten there around 11:30pm and was out by 12:15. The doctor that I had seen (Dr.Culica) , you would think she doesn’t like animals with how cold she was to my dog. When I told her that Freya had an ear infection the first thing she said was we’d have to sedate her to clean her ear. I told her that wasn’t necessary because I could hold her while she does it (as I’ve done with my regular vet) she seemed annoyed at that. Then said she was going to take my dog to a different area to clean her ears and I said because of my dogs diagnosed anxiety i would feel better if i could stay with her. As they started the cleaning my dog was trying to move her head and the doctor made the accusation that freya tried to bite one of the nurses and went to get a muzzle. I said you are not putting a muzzle on my dog, who again has anxiety. I told them I would like them to put the medicine in and I would be on my way. Almost $300 later, I hope her ear infection is cured. Nothing in that place sat right with me besides the friendly lady who checked us in.

Everyone there was excellent with caring for my dog. Super nice and helpful and took the time to explain everything to me. I didn’t feel rushed and my dog was really paid attention to and got the emergency care she needed late on a Saturday night. My dog actually didn’t want to leave.. she was having fun hanging with the staff!

My dog Cindy has been a patient with Internal Medicine and for Emergency Services since 2018. Our family vet Dr. Louis Reda sent us their way when she became suddenly sick with an autoimmune illness which was causing her to bleed out. At first, we were a little off put by the bedside manner of our specialty doctor in comparison to Dr. Reda whose style and bedside manner is totally different. However, her vet specialist, Dr. Schabbing is a very honest vet who will give you all the possible outcomes even though I didn't want to hear that my pet could die in the situation. In her week stay at the hospital receiving care, the doctor got to know our dog and fought for her as hard as she was fighting for her life. They let us visit as often as we wanted to. Every treatment option was offered to us and she continued to see the doctor every 3-6 months to make sure her labs were in check with the medicine. Later in her life, her immune illness is in check thanks to the care of ACNYVSF, he's still taking excellent care of her and they are always conscious of how much we spend on her care there. They have recently had new findings of her health and even when the prognosis didn't look the best, Dr. Schabbing is definitely going to bat for us so our dog could be part of our wedding in 2022 and that he would do everything in his power so a very important part of our family could be with us as long as possible. The staff there has extended my dog's life and they are definitely part of her fan club, giving her the best treatment every time she comes in. They answer our questions with great patience and respect for our girl. I feel like not every vet has the most respect for a dog's quality of life the way the team there has to our dog. Our family is beyond grateful for ACSNYVSF and in the future will turn to them with her specialty needs and any of our future pets' emergencies.
