How to Save Money at New Baltimore Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Staff is very gentle and caring with the pets. Offered a picture of a product they don't carry for our dogs teeth.

I cannot stress enough if you go here to make sure that you find out the cost of what they are doing before they bombard you with a huge bill. We took our sick cat here. Very healthy up to this point. Just over a year old to be exact - up to date on her shots, indoor cat and also spayed. This new vet DR Carrie (maybe that is not the correct spelling for him) whom we have never seen before this took us in, he heard only part of what I had to say that could possibly be the issue and ran all these tests that he did not discuss the price with me prior to doing, came back with little to no answers and then went on at check out after questioning this bill to say we’ll bring her back for a re-check and we may possibly need to do surgery! Surgery? For what??? He responded with it would be exploratory… Ok so we have almost $800 bill at this point -no take home medication and no answers. Next morning I rush her back down wait for the vet to open to be seen again. I am told my cat looks like she has a very RARE disease FIP… we just put our senior cat down a couple months ago. I am not ok with this answer I ask why did this vet yesterday run all the tests he did, when this vet says I don’t want to do further testing until we have this $200 bloodwork back, I just paid $140 yesterday for bloodwork. Oh this is different though. Are you kidding me??? I have still not heard from this vet office on the results of this test. I asked in the meantime to treat her for an infection. Guess what? My sick dying of an incurable illness is on the mend and you know what this vet office did not even care to contact us with those results that likely confirmed our cat was indeed very healthy and the cause of this commotion with her was literally that she had something stuck in her throat that she has thankfully thrown up. A concern I had the first day coming in and this man performed not one test to see if that was the problem. I am done, we have gave this vet office our business for years, as a child with my family and as an adult with my own fur babies. It’s absolutely disgusting that in this world where people can just barely get by as it is that these people take food out of the mouths of your household to give you no answers, and no true compassion. I am out close to $1000 from this vet office and I am furious bc the answers given to me I could have quite literally had to choose to put my cat down due to the inability to continue to pay for all these “exploratory” tests they kept pushing. Thank you for nothing but another bill we could not afford, I hope when your paychecks come in you are proud knowing that you received it off the backs of struggling families just trying to make sure their fur babies are ok. More importantly though, I hope you learn from this that people are due the courtesy of knowing what to expect before you just decide to rip open their wallets before asking if it is something they can afford to do and also not shaming them if it is not.

Very welcoming and kind. Our first visit here was an unfortunate one as our dog had been hit and did not make it. They were so gentle and sympathetic. They spoke quietly and easy but very informative. They did not treat us like it was "just a dog", they knew he was our family. They also have a very beautiful system for cremating your animal as that is what we chose to do. We will now take all our animals here for routine check ups and visits. Thank you so much for taking wonderful care of my sweet Rusty!!!

Wow......been using this place for more than 10 years and drive an hour to get there. Call and I'm told that their next appointment is mid August. Time to find someone local, I guess. Used to think they were a caring bunch of people, but apparently there have been some changes.....
