How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our 10 year old St.Bernard couldn’t stand or walk so we called to have him seen and they told us to bring him in. Unfortunately as we were pulling into the driveway he passed. The nurses came out checked his pulse and got him on a gurney and allowed our family to go into a room to decompress. We decided to bring him home to burry him so they did his paw prints and nose print, wrapped him up and brought him out to the car with a hand written card stating their condolences. We have never lost a pet and my family is very thankful for their kindness and compassion. Thank you.

Thank you, thank you!! I called prior to coming and Nick explained they were in surgery so there would be a wait. I stated I would still come now because I wanted to be seen after the surgery. I arrived, he was friendly, a vet tech saw me to be ready once surgery was over. They had many serious cases in the back being cared for. The vet came, provided excellent care, provided a quote prior to services to ensure we both agreed on how to proceed. Melvin was treated and he is now on the mend. For emergency care their price was fair and services were appropriate. I'm so thankful for them and highly recommend for your emergencies. They even provided me with supplies to clean up my car because they knew he had an accident in the vehicle.

My cat was having urinary issues (turned out to be anxiety related but scared me regardless) and this place was helpful and compassionate. It was like 3 am and no one acted inconvenienced or annoyed. I felt the pricing was entirely fair for an emergency. People are entirely too hard on those in the veterinary profession. Everyone here was amazing, be kind!

I called around 4pm today to see if an exotic vet was available & I was told they wouldn't be in until 6pm to call back then. I called about 7pm and vet was busy so told to call back 20-30 min later. I called back and was told that they could help with my animal. I arrived about 8pm and checked in. Waited in the waiting room for 2 hours before being taken to a triage room. Told the doc would be in soon. Another hr goes by and another associate comes in and asked me to return to the waiting room because other patients are more critical. That I could leave or wait several more hours. Unbelievable. There is one freaking exotic vet around here and I am the one told to wait when there are at least 2 more emergency vets that can see all these cats and dogs. Not once have they offered my pet water. I won't be paying a dime for the 3 hours I've waited to have my guinea pig weighed and listened to with a stethoscope. Absolutely disgusted to know that my pet is less valuable that someone else's. What am I supposed to tell my kid if they wake up in the am and their pet is dead.....

I was here earlier this week with my dog , Tulip. After having a mass removal by our regular vet on Monday, she was extremely sick Wednesday evening after our regular vet had closed. Although there was a bit of a wait, the staff seemed Tulip was not in critical condition (upon examination) and would be okay to wait. During our wait, the vet techs came in and checked in on us multiple times, and the doctor came in to also check in before treating her. The vet (Dr. Spires - you are awesome) did a thorough examination, was transparent regarding costs of treatments, answered all of our questions, and was very kind and compassionate - especially while being short staffed and very busy. We decided to leave Tulip there for the night to be cared for. I have never left Tulip overnight at the emergency vet, but I was confident and comfortable that she would be in the best hands. The entire staff is phenomenal, empathetic, and took the best care of my baby. I would recommend this location to anyone! Thank you all!
