How to Save Money at Roy J Appel DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very knowledgeable doctor. Very responsible answers He saw my cat and told me she had cancer before he even took the x rays.,and when no other vet would give me an immediate appointment. When I called his office I was told that they had no availability but if I would take my cat there and would not mind waiting he would see her. After the x-rays he confirmed it was cancer and explained my options. I am against euthanasia so I took her to specialists Pretty much from the specialists I was told the same thing. If you care about your pet and u can handle the truth without sugarcoating take your pet there. I am against euthanasia.... and my cat passed when it was time I wish you all the best for your pet.

The worst service ever. The doctor is an insane butcher, who tried to manipulate to get more money buy suggesting teeth removal for my cat who had current digestion problems just by looking at him. So, I asked to get a blood test first and paid for it but I couldn’t get results for two days until I scheduled an another appointment to outfox them. So I got suspicious and went to a different vet few days later, my cat’s teeth are fine, nothing to remove. By the way three or four people came to pick up their pets ashes while I was waiting in a line. Terrifying how some people try to make you pay for whatever to get more money knowing that you ready to pay any money for the pet you love like your own child. Disgusting.

The best vet in New York! He has saved our cat's life many times: when he had seizures, a skin infection, and pancreatitis. He knows what he's doing. Dr. Appel is extremely talented and professional. We will pray for long, healthy years for him so that he can continue performing his magic. Matthew says hi to his doctor!

i have no words for my experience this man should be shut down. i can see why some gave good reviews because depending on when you go depends on the service. this man is unpredictable unprofessional and disrespectful. he threatened not to see my dog if i kept talking after 3.15 hours of waiting. he didn't sedate my dog cause it was 6pm and would take hours to wake him up. he lied and told me he would sedate first visit. waiting for blood work results and will find another doctor. my poor dog is in pain and issue with the foxtail is not resolved as of yet. shame on him.

I had an absolutely horrible experience with Roy J Appeal DVM, who is also associated with Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital. In my opinion, they are nothing but scammers who have no clue what they're talking about. To top it off, they charged me a whopping $1000 for essentially doing nothing. When I returned to ask for the medication or a prescription and inquire about where to get it from, they outright refused to help me. To make matters worse, they didn't even bother calling me back when I tried to speak with the doctor. Instead, the doctor himself got in my face, yelled at me, and even threatened to call the police on me. I stood my ground and told him to go ahead and call the cops, as I firmly believed that I had been robbed. Shockingly, he refused to provide me with the medical records for my cat, despite the fact that my cat was still sick after just two weeks, throwing up and clearly in need of emergency care. This blatant refusal to release the paperwork prevented me from taking my cat to another vet promptly. It's abundantly clear that these people have no regard for animals or their well-being. They only care about squeezing as much money out of their clients as possible. They will use and abuse you, all while robbing you of your hard-earned money. I cannot stress enough how strongly I advise against seeking their services. Not only are they disrespectful, but the doctor also stooped to making racist jokes, suggesting that I should "hop on my camel" and go back home. It's absolutely disgusting. In summary, I had an appalling experience with Roy J Appeal DVM and Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital. They are nothing more than money-driven individuals who lack compassion and professionalism. I would never recommend their services to anyone.
