How to Save Money at Crown Heights Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Mathios and Dr. Tan are the best! Over the past many months my older cats have had a multitude of health issues, and they’ve both been knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate the whole time. Prices for veterinary care always seem expensive - but they aren’t disproportionately more than other providers in the area. I’m very grateful to live so close to such great care.

We had to say goodbye to our dog Crinklecut this past weekend, but Crown Heights Animal Hospital gave him the absolute best care possible over the past 3 and a half years. The doctors and nurses are kind and compassionate, and we always had our questions and concerns heard and answered. We're grateful they are our neighborhood vet, and hope someday to return with a new four-legged friend.

Missed many key issues with our dog over 7 years - caused our dog so much pain. Run from this place, please! So many issues with this place, but the worst: -For years they prescribed our dog flea/tick medication that is dangerous for dogs with epilepsy, even after we mentioned that each month he would have a seizure and vomit after taking it. We switched from a chew to topical because I was worried he wasn't absorbing the meds. The vet said we could "if we wanted." Only found out years later he should never been on it once he got an epilepsy diagnosis. -For almost two years our dog would yelp in pain, got lethargic, didn't want to play. Couldn't figure it out. Test after test. Eventually we thought maybe it was his teeth even though we brush them. CHAH said his teeth were fine... twice. Went to a dog dentist for second opinion and were told the opposite, most of his teeth needed to be pulled. By this point we are about done with CHAH. Absolutely shocking! We went to a third vet for a checkup and third opinion, same thing, he needs many teeth pulled and after he will be so happy again. Now it's like our 8 year old pup is a puppy again. He is so happy, so playful, and suffered for 2 years because of CHAH. His pain is barely mentioned in his CHAH chart. -Were "conveniently" told our dog needed the medicated food they just happen to sell in the lobby for his chronic UTIs. I asked why dogs get UTIs and was coldly told "they just do." Not an acceptable medical answer. My dog hated this food and it reeked. He was such a picky eater. Vet said "small dogs are just picky eaters." I didn't buy it. I read up on alternatives and found explained that a vet giving medicated food as first option for UTIs is a lazy vet. The answer is often dehydration. We switched him to Farmer's Dog and probiotics and he is not only incredibly excited to eat every single meal, I mean jumping 3 feet in the air excited, he has also not had a single UTI in many years. (I'm curious the percentage of CHAH pets who "need" this particular food compared to other neighborhoods...) Other things we learned from our new vet after two visits that CHAH never mentioned in 7 years of consistent visits and checkups: -He had a broken rib at some point that healed (probably before we adopted him). -He has a spine condition that could get worse as he ages. -He has slightly cloudy eyes. This place is so terrible. It looks nice inside, but staff turnover is high and they are not doing their due diligence. Please take your post elsewhere! 7 years of so much wasted time, dangerous negligence, watching our pup suffer. Despite this all being in our records, CHAH refuses to reimburse for the wasted time, testing with no answers, and thousands of wasted dollars. Oh and, they charge so much for meds, get them from Chewy instead. Our dogs epilepsy meds would have been $45/month. They are $9/month online or at a regular pharmacy.

Been taking my cat here for a few years now however after the Pandemic this place has become extremely terrible, uncomendating, and very unprofessional. The price isn't equivalent to the service it's extremely expensive and usually always an extra charge. Also flexibility is horrible due to limited vet hours and space. In addition now there's a lady at the front desk white, glasses, short, she's extremely rude and lazy. I came in 4/4/2023 around 2pm Greeted with an attitude, the usual as of recent and an unpleasant "you could sit." After all was done, I sat waiting to be addressed or told to wait for further steps with my pet for about 5 to ten minutes only to be ignored by front desk ladies talking about a show they're currently watching "Married at first sight" it was only up until I got up ready to walk out if nothing further was required, for front desk to realize I wasn't charged for blood work. Then they had the audacity to rush me for payment, "I'm waiting on you." But what make matters worst she was unwilling to give physical receipt because she already "emailed it" with an eye roll. Once I left to get my pet home. I immediately went back to get a physical copy with a different front desk worker and it was done without hesitant, attitude, or complaint, so I'm summing it all up to racists bias or just a personal dislike despite not knowing her because multiple occasions she's given terrible service. Once I get a name I'll be writing another review however this will be my last time taking my fur child there save yourself time money and unnecessary attitude and don't go there

I originally started this location with Dr Novak for my first furbaby. Due to more serious medical conditions he was being treated at Blue Pearl. I now have 2 fur babies and was happy to see Dr. Novak still working here. Tiarra got me the first available appointment, Dawn was very helpful at checkout and scheduling future appointments. The technician (I did not get her name) handled Summer and Winter with care. I was very pleased with my visit and I do recommend the Crown Heights Animal team.
