How to Save Money at Bushwick Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone working there was so kind and helpful. My dog can't be around other dogs and they were extremely accommodating and understanding, and made sure we got into and out of the office without interaction with other animals. My dog hates getting vaccines but they kept it quick and painless. Extremely low stress as far as vet visits go for my sweet pup. $300 for the vet visit, a stool sample exam, and 3 vaccines. On the pricier side in general but very inexpensive for New York (unfortunately lol).

This vet office is terrible! They claim to “work with rabbits”, but my experience says otherwise. Over the span of a month they could not diagnose my rabbit. I switched to a new vet clinic and my rabbits issue gets diagnosed in ONE DAY! I can’t even make this up. Their communication is horrible. I tried to call the vet to ask questions and I was ignored/left on hold for 30 minutes. When the vet finally called me back he let me know that my case wasn’t his priority. They are unprofessional and took a ton of money from me to not even solve my problem. Thank you so so much for this eye opening experience.

I honestly can’t believe the level of care given to our Pomeranian by every employee at Bushwick Veterinary Center. He had a complication with a risky surgery, and he was given 24 hour nurse care who sent us text messages with photos and updates about his progress. They had someone come to our home to provide him with fluids and check in on him when he came home. The amount of love every single employee expressed for him and to him honestly made me cry. After a week of getting check-in calls every day, our little Toby is good as new. I could not recommend this facility more highly. The vet, Dr. Taie, the nurses, techs, the folks answering phones… everybody made this very difficult situation so much better. I honestly believe the amount of love our little guy received, apart from wonderful medical care, helped him heal faster and better. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

Dr. Taie is a one of a kind vet with a heart of gold. Not only is he a top-notch medical practitioner but he genuinely has love and deep compassion for all living creatures. Every time we walk into Bushwick Vet I know we are in good hands, even in the most challenging situations. He cares for every animal like it’s his own, and I am so grateful to call him our vet.

These people are thieves, lol. Went to annual appointment, where they didn’t tell me to bring a fecal sample, they made me pay for it (which I discovered only later, when in fact the nurse had told me they had removed that charge from my bill) then receptionist told me I can keep it in the fridge for up to 30 days and sent me off. I come back a month later, with a fecal sample 3.5 days old that I also put in the fridge right away, they told me that A) sample wasn’t good anymore (now suddenly the thirty days became 1 day or up to 24h if in the fridge) B) that I had to pay AGAIN for the service that I DID NOT get, C) refused to run that service with the sample I gave them and that I had already paid for. They did not listen to reason while they are the ones who clearly miscommunicated (told me the wrong expiration date for the fecal sample, omitted to tell me that I had to come back within a certain date AND refused to run the service I already PAID for). Don’t care about the stupid double entry for cats and dogs, if you guys are just stealing money and incompetent in communicating. 🙅🏻‍♀️
